Old email account compromised?

Hi,

TLDR; My Spotify account appears to have been compromised using my old ntlworld account

I've been a VirginMedia/NTL customer for a very long time and had many accounts and email accounts over the years.  My main email had always been my original @ntlworld.com account that I kept migrating to the various VM accounts I've had.  This was until approximately 2 years ago when I had completely new VM broadband account which no longer came with email access.  I assumed my old email addresses had been deleted.

Yesterday I started using my Spotify account again after a break of about a year.  It was still using my old ntlworld.com email address, so I changed it to use my new email address.  I didn't bother changing the password.

Unfortunately, today I received an email from Spotify to say that the email had been reverted, I've been signed out of all my devices and the username/password no longer works.

Could someone please take a look at whether my account is still active?  I've tried to sign in via mail2.virginmedia.com, but it says the credentials are incorrect.

Ideally, I'd like to recover this and a few other email addresses.  It would be easy to recover my Spotify account then.

  • Update: I've managed to gain access to the @ntlworld.com account now, using an old MacBook that is still configured to access it.

    The problem I have now is that I cannot change the password for that account since it isn't attached to my VM account.

    Could someone help with this please?

      Sorry to hear of the issues experienced with the E-Mail account.

      We would need to advise that if this E-Mail address is not connected to an active account, we would may not be able to have this resolved.

      However, we can potentially review the prospect of a move and transfer from a former account to active account, but this would still be dependant on the status of the E-Mail account.

    In fact you can check yourself to see if the email account has been deleted.

    Send a test email to the affected Ntlworld address and see if you get a delivery failure message back.

    If you get a failed delivery message back that means the mailbox no longer exists and that means it's gone for good.

    If you don't get any response back then it  would suggest the mailbox itself still exists. Sadly that does not necessarily mean that VM can/will be able to be able to allow you to regain access to the account. However, that's a discussion that you will need to have with them directly,

    One of the VM forum team (VM staff who support this forum) will be contacting you in the next day or so.
