How long are emails kept

I would like to know how long Virgin Media keeps emails on the server. When I ask the question on any search engine, all I get is how long they are kept after leaving Virgin Media. I am not leaving, but want to access old emails.

The reason I am posting is because I have moved to Windows 11 and all my emails are now IMAP, which does not save local copies. I used to have POP3 on my Windows 10 and was able to keep all old emails archived locally. This is not longer possible. There does not seem to be any way to access archived emails on the website either.

p.s. When I used to post to the Virgin Media Community, there used to be options to post to a specific forum group. That appears to be gone, or I can't find it. There appear to be only Tech and Community natter?

[mod - thread moved to correct section]

  • Emails should remain on the VM servers until you delete them either via the VM webmail page or via an email client connected using the IMAP protocol.  Emails moved to the VM Trash folder remain there for seven days before being permanently removed.

You should still be able to move emails to local folders within your chosen email client even when using the IMAP protocol.  Some email clients including Thunderbird still allow accounts to be added using the POP3 protocol.

  • OK, figured out where the question should have been posted. Someone seems to have moved it already - thanks

But Virginmedia do not offer any guarantee of security for emails on their server. If it fails and emails are lost, you will be relying on your own backups.

Agree with jpeg1  Far too many people use email as a storage vault and take the risk.  I know with Outlook 365 IMAP you can export your mailbox to a PST file for local / cloud storage.  You should also take a look at Mailstore Home for offline storage as well.
