Poor form to respond to one's own unanswered topic, I know but ...

For anyone with an interest in understanding where the recent announcement for digital ID came from, this guy below has set out a series of videos which explain how we came to the current position. It has not happened overnight. The videos are in order and provide a good explanation of the likely pitfalls and dangers of the proposals and how they fit into a bigger picture of digitisation. Many will already have started their journey into digital ID without actually realising it.

I thought I already had a digital id, I’ve got a National Insurance number, and NHS number and a driving licence number. The only thing I have not got is a UK passport as I’m not a UK citizen although I have been in the UK since 1954.

We all have the component parts of a digital ID albeit they currently exist as largely separate entities for separate purposes.

The gov't OneLogin will unify (is unifying) all of them for each individual for future storage in the UK Gov digital wallet along with biometric info to be accessed via a smart device.

And so the process begins! Company directors and military veterans are being used as the case studies for the project.

What it is trying to do is to identify directors / officers etc of companies that are the same person but have registered under different variations of their name or even under an alias or under a conferred title as Prince Andrew is known to have done.

My phone biometric is broken but my Phone still works just fine with patten lock so if they want biometric from me they can give me a new phone.

No joke my phone biometric is broken

  • So.. I'm a UK citizen, I was born in the UK, my entire family history is from the UK (Ireland ifnyy look back 4 generations, Scotland for several generations before that). But it took me 6 months and £200 to get a UK passport because my mother was adopted... no other reason...

Both her birth and adopted parents were British, so there shouldn't have been an issue... but it still took that long and cost that much.

Now.. following on from that issue...

Under current British laws.. you CANNOT be forced to pay for ID of any kind, that includes age checks.

This includes any and all age verification, passports, etc. You cannot be charged for anything that is required within the UK, you only need to pay for documents related to your leaving or entering.

    Based on that fact...

This means that the ONLY ID that can be accepted 100% of the time is one that you don't have to pay for... which in the UK only includes 1 document: your birth certificate.

So yes, right now unless the law changes stores in the uk HAVE TO BY LAW accept your birth certificate as photo ID, even though it doesn't include a photo (which would be useless even if it did).

Woolworths was the only store I know of that followed this rule properly and accepted birth certificates as photo id (they're not "photo id" but legally they have to be...)

A lovely family snapshot and an unexpected but welcome mention of Woolworths.
