Virgin WIFI Pod - is it any good?

I have got white wifi pod from Virgin to improve a signal in my second bedroom.  It kind of works, but I am not impressed - it only gives me a speed of 30Mbps, while TP Link range extender  AC1750 was giving me signal up to 5 times faster. Only the issue with TP Link range extender is that I had to reboot it time from time.

Is there anything I should check for?

  • Now it seems my MAC randomly connecting to pod or router which is located in another part of the house. Why would not it always be connected to POD which is helf way through?

The "roaming" of the device is determined by the device, not the Pod.  AFAIK, the Pods do not have any management software to allow / disallow devices to force connections to a particular Pod / Hub.  As the VM Intelligent Wifi needs a single SSID, you cannot even name the Pod with _EXT as a method of connection.

Basically no, it's not a good solution.

I've just got one for free and I'm seriously considering that the risks of using it are not worth the notional benefits. Firstly, I have over 20 devices around the house that I would have to re-initialise all over again, because the POD is hard-wired to the original SSID of the router ('VMxxxxxx'). Which will be a huge effort.

Second, the device consolidates both 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands. It's not clear exactly what effect this has as presumably, devices have opted to choose one or the other on the basis of signal strength.

Third, looking at the VM Community pages, there seem to be a lot of threads about issues with these devices.

It just looks easier and safer to not turn it on and go for some third-party solution.

Only seeing 30Mb/s from the VM Pod suggests a connection on the 2.4MHz band.

Is the VM Pod not working on the 5GHz band because the VM Hub's SSIDs are split,
that is the VM Hub's SSIDs differ on the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands ?
