Regularly have to reboot Hub 3

Every few months, I have to reboot my Hub 3, then my WiFi pods disconnect and refuse to reconnect. I end up swapping them around because when setting them up, you have to assign them a location, even though they already have one.
Does anyone else have this problem?

Roll on July when my contract runs out.

We have a VM Hub 3, it runs for many months without need of any attention,
usually only being restarted by a power cut or for a furniture move.

  • I also have a Hub3 and only reboot it when the speed at a device goes very low, which is not very often.  When I do the WiFi pods connect themselves after a short time, I have never heard of them having to be assigned a location.

Came on here to see if others have this issue, and it seems they do.

We had a HUB 3 for years, and it was fine until about a month ago, when it started either losing broadband entirely or just the WiFi. Rebooting always fixed it, but then we found certain Wifi devices not able to connect (IP WebCam, Solar Dongle and Smart Bulbs). I figured the router was old and contacted VM, and they agreed to send a new router (still a Hub 3, which was disappointing).

We've had that for 3 days, and it had been fine, but just today it lost broadband, for which a reboot has fixed it.

So confidence is low to say the least, we both work from home so it's imprevitive the broadband is reliable.

VM do not have any SLA's for Residential contracts.  If WFH is important, you should have a backup.

As for the Hub 3, can you post the network log and power levels for comment.   Also setup a BQM to monitor and record your incoming circuit  http://www.thinkbroadband.com/ping

As you seem to have a large amount of Wifi related IoT, you may find the Hub 5's ax Wifi protocol may be worse?  I would suggest you look to get your own Wifi kit that you can manage as you see fit.

Re: SLA and Working from home. I understand all that, but it's been rock solid since March 2020. So I'm not making rash decisions just yet. The backup is hot-spotting to my 4G/5G phone. But yeah, I've looked into getting a separate WiFi router.

        I've setup BQM after today's outage. That's here;

Attached are all the logs etc. The ATOM Kernal panics are not a good look, but a quick search suggest this is the norm for a VM Hub 3 :/

Thanks for your interest and future help.

  • Hi Chrispy1 👋 Welcome back to the forum! Thanks for starting this thread.

Sorry to hear your concerns about your POD setup when your hub re-boots.

Just to help us diagnose this a little better, can you please clarify - are you having to move the PODs when you reboot because when you first set them up they were in different parts of your home?

If you are having issues with your Hub itself please let us know so that we can investigate and arrange a replacement if needed! (We can also then re-pair your pods to a new hub if you need one.)

We'd like to get things sorted for you. Let us know and we can offer further help - thanks for your patience in the meantime! 🌞

The hub runs smoothly for weeks, sometimes even months, but eventually the signal strength on my devices starts to drop, prompting me to reboot it. That usually fixes things, but not always. Checking the VM Connect app shows the pods are either disconnected or have weak signals. Rebooting a WiFi pod never works, so I end up removing it. When I try to reinstall, it asks me to assign it to a room but won’t allow it since it’s already assigned there. I get around it by swapping the pods, which works—until the problem comes back.

It’s frustrating, especially since my son’s been with Vodafone for over a year without any issues.

As you have a Hub 3, I'm assuming you are renting the Pods, in which case I would suggest you think seriously about getting your own Wifi kit.
However, just in case you are not aware, the Pods all need to be in an area of Wifi coverage, i.e not in a "dead spot".  So, moving them around my help?  The "primary" Pods needs to communicate with the Hub, and the other Pods need to communicate with another Pod, of that makes sense?  Each Pod "hop" reduces the speed by around half and increases latency btw, unless they are all cable connected back to the Hub.
