Recommended WiFi 6 Mesh system for Hub 3

Hi all,

I have a self-made mesh system that works but is nont delivering the VM speeds.  So I am giving up on it.

So I am not looking for a new complete WiFi 6 Mesh system that works with Hub 3 out of the box and delivers the VM speeds (or close to them, not 1/3).  Something fool-proof, easy to set up, etc.

I was looking at

Amazon eero 6+ mesh Wi-Fi router

but would be good to hear from owners / users.

Any other setups that people have experience with and that work flawlessly?  TIA!

  • Or this? Anyone connected it to Hub 3 and is getting close to the actual speeds, eg 250MBps

Any Wi-Fi solution that takes a Wi-Fi signal over multiple Wi-Fi hops ( i.e. a Wi-Fi Mesh or WI-Fi Pods / Repeaters ) can be expected to loose at least 50% of Wi-Fi speed per hop.

For a full speed Wi-Fi solution, look to network cable connected Wireless Access Points.

As Client62 above, however if the Mesh/AP's have a dedicated Wifi  "backhaul" these will perform similar to a wired one.  They usually use an isolated 5Ghz signal for the backhaul and this does not interfere with the normal 2.4 and 5Ghz bands.

I would also recommend you use modem mode on the Hub 3, and note the Hub itself is only Wifi 5 when running as a Router.

  • Choose EEro if you mainly need WIFIif you need physical ethernet ports to connect devices you most probably need to buy an external switch. Eero delivers in performance but if you want advanced manageable features then it is a bit limited. Asus is the best in class i would say from the searches i have done in the past days, i just got the ASUS BT8 and provides high performance and advanced management with 4 ethernet ports at the back of each satellite

Personally I wouldn't use the Amazon Eero or Google mesh, as I believe they are too locked down in the management department.  Most of the other "proper" networking suppliers are better in this respect, with full management, either in a cut down phone app, or the full blown PC/Mac controller software.

Things to consider here.. running in Modem mode with a good router may give you the performance throughout your property you are looking for especially if you can place the router in a good position in relation to the virgin hub 3. Secondly if you can run an ethernet cable to another room then you would benefit from a repeater perhaps? I did lok long and hard at this and I found my choice came down to the TP-link Ax75 mesh system however once I replaced my hub for a wifi 6e hub (an AXE75 from tplink) I found that I did not have problems across my property and also eventually removed my devolo magic 6 plugs too which actually also wored really well for me to be honest as I had an ethernet cable in the other half of the house with a swicth and the devolo plugged into that and a repeater upstairs. My personaly preference would be to ditch using the hub 3 as a modem and go with a new router first and you may be surprised with the performance upgrade you get.
