New to Virgin Media

I've recently joined VM, having had a Hub 5 router installed following a number of years with Sky as we have just had full fibre upgraded locally. I was advised prior to install, as I have an Amplifi HD WiFi system consisting of  two mesh points (one upstairs and one downstairs) a main HD router adjacent the Hub 5 with four others throughout the house to extend the WiFi capability, to ask the engineer to install the router in Modem mode. He told me that is not possible with the Hub 5 router, but a quick google would imply it most certainly is.

As such, can I log in to the Hub via 192.168.0.1, and change the Hub to Modem mode thus being able to use my Amplifi system effectively. I believe the Hub password etc will be on the base / back ( and it isn't the same as the WiFi password etc)

I currently have an ethernet cable from the "Fast Port" on the Hub5 into my Amplifi HD box and have all tech connected to the Amplifi system although the one stream box I currently have (ordered 5 but only got one initially and still waiting for the other four) while connected to the Amplifi network suffered with "buffering." I connected to the Hub 5 and the buffering issue disappeared!

So, I currently have two WiFi networks (Hub & Amplifi) and appreciate this isn't ideal so would like to disable WiFi from the Hub 5 so I can use the Amplifi system properly. I did a Speedtest after a couple of days via my iPad and was only getting 30'ish MBPS, which is way less than I used to get with Sky Superfast!!

Can I also connect the Amplifi routers and Streams (when I get the other four) via Ethernet to provide a more stable connection to the Stream boxes.

Any advice gratefully received in ensuring I get the best form the VM set up.

Thanks in advance

  • I'll check later but I'm fairly sure it will be the Hub 5x as I have a fibre cable connection into the rear (white cable with green plug)

Our full fibre upgrade comes from a cable from the closets telegraph pole to the VM brown box outside with a separate cable into the white box inside.

Am I right then in thinking I cannot put it into Modem mode to utilise my Amplifi system and only one WiFi network in our home?

    Cheers

The Hub 5X has no modem mode.

The Hub 5x has no modem mode. There have been past topics on the forum where users have discovered a modem mode button in the web interface for the Hub 5x.

I haven't followed the (mis)fortunes of modem mode on the 5x but my last understanding was some claim to have got it working (but may be restricted to a 1 Gbps port). Others claim to have got it working only for it to randomly fail later on. Others have never managed to get it to work. Basically it is not a VM-supported feature on the Hub 5x.

There is also an unofficial workaround described online using unsupported hardware to replace the Hub 5x.

VM has two types of fibre network, and one of them is used with the hub 5X which has no modem mode and is the only hub with a 10Gbps LAN port.
