Hub 5 and WiFi Pod (black) Ethernet Backhaul

Having received a WiFi Pod and connected via ethernet how can I tell from vm connect app or the router if the Pod is connected to the router via ethernet or WiFi?

  • We don't have VM Pods and never will.  No No No !

But we do have Wireless Access Points & their behaviour might be a useful clue as to what to look for in the VM Hub >>> "Connected devices" menu.

A Wi-Fi AP is connected to the VM Hub via a network cable, this means that all the devices that are Wi-Fi connected to the Wi-Fi AP ( black Pods in your case ) look like they are Ethernet connected at 100 / 1000 ( in "Connected devices" ) depending on the network cable rate to the Wi-Fi AP / black Pod.

What do you see for the cable connected black VM Pods ?

  • Hi VMConsumer2025,

Thanks for taking the time to contact us via the Community. It's lovely having you on board with us in the Forums. ⭐

There are a few requirements for the Pods to work with our Hubs. You can view these below:

    • ➡ The Hub must be in 'Router Mode' and not have been changed to 'Modem Mode'
    • ➡ Channel Optimisation must be left on
    • ➡ The SSIDs must be the same and broadcast enabled
    • ➡ The SSID must be password protected
    • ➡ The Passphrases of the SSIDs must match

As long as all of the above points are all met then the Pods will automatically connect to your Hub's WiFi and begin broadcasting. The wireless details from the Pods will be the same as the Hub's details, so no additional steps are required to connect up the devices in the home. This does mean that you will just show as connected to the hub, and not the pod specifically.

Let us know if you have any further queries or questions.

    Many thanks,

      Thanks Kath_P.

Unfortunately this doesn't actually answer my question regarding if when connected over ethernet the pods will use the ethernet cabling for connection to hub instead of WiFi.

This would be hugely beneficial if it can as there would be no degradation in signal so would mean that when connected via WiFi in close proximity to the pod it should be possible to achieve speeds similar to those experienced when connected near the hub itself.

Are you able to confirm if an ethernet connection between the hub and the pod would be used for the backhaul connection please?

They will not be able to confirm this suggest you look at other options

Yes I can see that any devices connected to the pod are showing as connected to ethernet at 1000 which is as fast as the cabling and switch on my network is capable of, more than sufficient for a home network though. This would lead me to believe it is using the cable for backhaul. :-)

The Hub5 and VM connect could be improved to report this more clearly. Obviously my devices connected via WiFi to the pod are not communicating at 1000mbps.

      Many thanks Client62.

Simple answer to the OP. Hold a phone near the pod and run a speed test app to check the download speed. Then disconnect the ethernet cable and measure again. If the speed is now lower, the ethernet was previously working and will again when you reconnect it.

The speed vis WiFi will always be slower than by ethernet.

Providing the mobile phone is not the limiting factor !

Connecting with an Ethernet cable always takes priority over WiFi, so you only get WiFi if the cable is not connected.
