ASUS BE6500 via Modem Mode Hub5x

Hello you clever bunch of enthusiasts!!

After our usual annual swap of accounts to get the the best deals, an inconvenience in itself. We have hit a road block support won't help with.

Internet before modem mode working fine, after setting Hub5x to Modem Mode, going through the setup the new router asked about the connection type.

I put Automatic IP and after 5 mins Im seeing the network map with Internet connected. But the laptop I'm testing on is showing connection (no issues) but won't serve pages on chrome.

Virgin support says- as soon as Modem mode is on, we dont support you.  Not even to confirm any technical specifications of the Modem.

Ive seen people saying they have their 3rd party routers set up and working,  I'd like to get this working to benefit from the full 1.16gbps I can see on fast.com.

Is this something Im not doing right on the Router or a limitation / issue with the Modem mode of the Hub5x?

Any help or advise would be truly appreciated 👏

  • SOLUTION --- WAN NOT ON PORT 4 --> PORT 1

Every guide I could find points to port 4 being the WAN port, even the guide on VM says port 4.  I simply tried port 1 and it's working.

Note this is a solution for HUB 5.

Not ... Hub 5x  -- I hope you 5x'ers get your modem mode soon!!  Shocking shame you've not been given the support / hardware to have LAN freedom.  Shame on you VM!!

Modem mode is not working on the Hub 5X and is unsupported by VM.  The latest firmware removes the "hidden modem mode page"  I believe.  Some users have reportedly been able to get this working, but generally within a week, it breaks again.

Ive seen on these forums some people are able to use the modem mode, I'm a 1 Gb user and  upgraded all my network to Cat 6 and 2.5gbps Nics / Switches.

Have you got experience of a <1gb network with a 3rd party router or just telling something Ive seen online here but just experienced.

Im willing to try at least before rolling over lol.

Modem only mode is not hidden at all on my Hub5... it's as clear an option in the admin area as anything else.

    You can view my theory

A theory as to why VM does not have modem mode on hub 5x | Virgin Media Community - 5649568

modem mode is not listed on the hub supported or not not that VM support ANYthing you connect to the hub not even a PC. Basically welcome to VM here dig yourself a 6ft hole.

I believe the problem has to do with VLAN's or not that is VM network in your area for Fibre may be tagged to like 100 or untagged and the one doing the firmware tried to do the right thing but has not fully done it the best way in that there is only one modem mode option where by I think 1Gb port on the hub is untag to then VLAN 100 tag out and port 10Gb is untag to untag so that one will work. of course you want the 10Gb port to work so really their needs to be two modem mode options tag and untag.

So when my Laptop was still connected to the Hub5x in router mode I thought I still had Internet.

I followed I think your instructions Legacy turned off the modem set up the router turned it back on and was showing Inrnet Ststus : connected.

I just restarted the Router and now I'm getting : Your ISP's DHCP does not function properly.

This router has SPF I believe and someone mentioned double NAT here:

Is the only way to get this working really to use my Gaming Router as an Access Point?

Im looking to tweak out every squeeze of ping I can, I checked my connection for Jitter and its very low, so invested in this upgrade after having the Modem Only option on my Hub5x all year...!

It didn't occur to me that VM was just showing an option without the system available or with severe limitations to force us using their hardware!?

Is there any progress on a solution or anything I can try to get this up and running?

As an access point am I going to get that granularity with Networking features?

The Hub5x is so restrictive with filtering my kids different ages cant even have different downtime on the Hub5x, I really hoped this would solve the poor WiFi signal and give me better LAN controls!

you can search "better internet sfp"

  • Update the network map on Asus BE6500 now says Internet Status: Connected again?!  Showing an Internet presence.

While ive been on my phone here the fast.com page loaded and shows a successful test @140kbps.

Refreshing fast.com is now again "This site cant be reached" for a min, then loads again with a VEEEERY slow connection (its currently 110 is KBPS.

Why order VM XGS-PON knowing modem mode is not supported and knowing claims of reliable Modem mode being available as a work around are quite dubious to very doubtful.

Just be aware the folks that claim to have Hub 5 x Modem mode working are last to return to the forum and write alas it was all in vain we had to reset the Hub 5x back to Router mode to restore the service.

Well VM might be their only option for a ISP with inbound traffic support and if no one joins VM for this reason how are VM to know people want it?

also does the hub 5x in router mode allow port 25 inbound?

can I firewall ICMP inbound so BQM is only allowed?

Correct VM is the only ISP in my area with 1gbps

Guys I did a bit of Cisco a while back but not to any deep level, if you dont mind trying to keep communicating to me acronym free (as far as you can) that would be awesome.

You guys know your stuff but I dont know my ICMPs from my BQMs lol.

Im going to Ethernet into the router now and see if I can find what your talking about.

Thabks so far for sticking with me I appreciate your expertise all of you.

Ok you got it working but you connected to the 1Gb port or 10Gb port of the hub (2.5Gb on hub 5)? plus your laptop may only support 1Gb link which is about 940Mb

    You need one of these

UGREEN USB Ethernet Adapter, 2.5Gbps High-Speed Network Adapter for Gaming, USB 3.2 Gen 1 RJ45 Gigabit LAN Adaptor, Compatible with PC, Laptop, Switch, Xbox, Router, Surface Pro, Steam Deck : Amazon.co.uk: Computers & Accessories

If your on Docsis then you don't have the hub 5x in which case modem mode is supported

Yes, I didn't do anything to be fair lol. This was happening before I plugged in the BE6500. I could access the internet on the BE6500 — there was a wizard asking me to set it up. I chose "Automatic IP" for connection type and left the DHCP option blank. Was this my mistake? I thought DHCP would be handled by my router, not the modem...?

Maybe there's a setting not correctly configured that's causing the issue?

This is why I was asking if there's a guide your guys might know of — something to check I've set up the router correctly for modem mode, or if I'm just experiencing the same "Modem Only" issues that everyone else here has had?

Any guidance is appreciated, of course. As before, the option to use the Hub 5 (Router mode) > BE6500 (Access Point mode) is still there. I'm sure the router (which has 2.5Gbps ports) will still allow me to get 1Gbps speeds, since the limiting hardware is probably my laptop — which would explain the sub-1Gbps speed tests.

Does your advice change knowing I may have a Hub 5?

(Sorry about that... basic mistake... my fault.)

If it helps, here's some info from Hub 5 > Admin > Info:

      Standard specification compliant: DOCSIS 3.1
      Hardware version: 1.2
      Software version: LG-RDK_7.6.20-2306.5

Well I don't know why people are having a hard time with modem mode unless I go out my way to get your router then I would know.

I did do a test when got the hub5 to insure DHCP Bootp flags Unicast and broadcast are supported and they are.

Reset the BE6500 and do the DHCP again as that is right or as you have your laptop working in modem mode you can just copy its MAC in to your BE6500 WAN setting then hook it up.

If Hub 5 Port 4 is the 2.5Gbps port, to work that requires your ASUS Router to have EEE / "Energy Efficient Ethernet" set to disabled on its WAN port.
