Another Hub 5 Modem Mode Question... Sorry

Hi all,

First off, apologies for the post but I can find no one single source of truth across these forums with lots of conflicting information. ...

The ask...

I have a hub 5, which has the ability to toggle modem and router mode. I can successfully turn the modem mode on, however when connecting a switch to port 1 [the only active port when in this mode], the router does not get sent a DHCP IP address, and as such can not connect to the internet via the hub 5 "modem".

I can set a static IP on the WAN interface on the router, at which point it does see some traffic being sent both on TX and RX, however that is about as far as I can get.

Speaking to Virgin technical support, which in this instance was not great (they were trying to sell me a gadget support contract and did not understand the networking questions I had), it was escalated to tech support management at which point I was told you need a business contract for modem mode to work. Not sure I totally buy that, however before spending another few hours at the terminal I thought I would check with the community.

For info the switch is a tp-link omada.

I have tired in addition to the above :

  1. cloning the hub 5 mac onto the router WAN port
  2. setting a vlan tag on the network (i read somewhere it needed to be set)
  3. communicating via ICMP  (no dns) to known public endpoints that would respond

Any help greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

  • Correct, modem mode is an option any customer can use (I use it).

Can you please confirm you have a HUB 5, and not a HUB 5x, indicated by either a coax or fibre connection to the HUB.

Not a switch incompatibilty as such, possibly an incorrect setting.

If the laptop/PC does work you could try cloning their MAC address in the tp-link settings.

  • What do you mean by "when connecting a switch to port 1".

Do you mean connecting the tp-link's WAN port directly to the HUB?

Yes correct the WAN port of the TP Link to the active port on the smart hub 5. I believe from memory it was port 1

And there are no other wired devices connected to the HUB?

And the HUB has been rebooted since only connecting the tp-link?

If you connect a laptop or PC via ethernet, and reboot the HUB, do they get an internet connection?

  • First off thanks for taking the time to dig into this with me. Can I infer from your questions that this is actually a supported configuration, and that the advice about it being a "business customer" only feature is incorrect?

To confirm there were no other Ethernet cables connected to the hub.  I will need to go and recheck (when the family won't notice the internet outage) in terms of connecting a different device such as a laptop, if this does work would that indicate a switch incompatibility?

        Great news, thanks for confirming.

It is a Hub 5 which has the Coax cable, not from my understanding the newer hub 5 that supports the XGS-PON direct fibre connection.

Will test later, and try and clone a laptop mac (if it connects). Thanks.

  • @carl_pearce, thanks so much !!! I cloned my laptop MAC it is sprung into life. Really appreciate your help, now time to start configuring the home network :-) Thanks again.

It 'should' have just worked, but at least you've got it sorted.

You cannot use a unmanaged switch to the hub in modem mode two devices with different MAC's will not work VM only allows one source MAC from a given WAN IP by DHCP

They aren't using a switch, it was just the terminology used.

Ok so the old MAC clone did the trick for them :)
