2.4g and 5g pod issue

Hi, I wonder if someone can help with this. I plugged in my pod this morning, and for some reason it now only shows 2g as an option when I look at my internet choices. Previously it showed both the 2g and 5g. However, when I click on 2g where you get information like download speed etc, it says 5ghz. Does that mean they are merged?

Thanking in advance

  • Yes - when using the Pods you have to have "Smart wifi" enabled - this merges them into a single SSID.

Some like this arrangement for its convenience - I personally think its the work of Satan 😎

I prefer to have them separated (as I have) so I can choose which device connects on which band - when and where I choose.

The VM WiFi Pods only work with the Single SSID. The Intelligent WiFi will not work without this “out of the box” setup.

Thank you. We're not sure what we prefer as it seems all our devices are in 5g, albeit it shows 2g. The five doesn't have the same reach as 2.

    Have you either :
    1) split the SSIDs on the VM Hub ?
    2) turned off the 5GHz Wi-Fi band on the VM Hub ?

Either would result in a VM Pod only working on a single band.

Thank you. No, we never touched anything. Both were showing before plugging in the pod. Definitely on shows 2g being available but when you look at the details on it says connected to 5g bandwidth.

  • Hi Thelyon5,

Thanks for taking the time to contact us via the Community. It's lovely having you on board with us in the Forums.

We're sorry to hear you're having issues with the Pod connecting.

There are a few requirements for the Pods to work with our Hubs. You can view these below:

    • The Hub must be in 'Router Mode' and not have been changed to 'Modem Mode'
    • Channel Optimisation must be left on
    • The SSIDs must be the same and broadcast enabled
    • The SSID must be password protected
    • The Passphrases of the SSIDs must match

As long as all of the above points are all met then the Pods will automatically connect to your Hub's WiFi and begin broadcasting. The wireless details from the Pods will be the same as the Hub's details, so no additional steps are required to connect up the devices in the home.

Once you've reverted your hub back to the above settings, if you continue to have issues, pop back and let us know so we can help further.

    Thanks,

Thank you. We never changed anything. I will think about doing a factory reset on the hub as I can't remember the password and I believe that's the only way to access it and check. However 100% sure SSIDs passwords are all the same .

How are you seeing the 2.4GHz and 5GHz signals  .... I can only see that in a Wi-Fi Analyser app.

On my phone. Previously it should the two WiFi bands. Now just shows 2g. Same as on other things like the TV. But when we run test signal on the TV it says connected to 2g but the frequency is 5g.

This sounds like you had previously split the 2.4 & 5 GHz bands into two different SSIDs.
Split SSIDs are not compatible with VM Pods as outlined earlier in this post.

But now I suspect the VM Hub (or Connect app) has re-merged the bands into one common SSID
and it is now using the SSID from the 2.4GHz entry for both bands.

This would explain how you only see the name of the 2.4 GHz band but your TV can make a 5GHz connection.

Login to the VM Hub menu and have a look at the Wireless settings to see exactly how it is configured.

You are right. After I reset the hub to factory settings I remember I added 2g and 5g myself years ago to differentiate them. So this split the SSIDs.

To run the VM Hub with split SSID the VM Pod would need to be replaced
with a retail WI-Fi Repeater that supports split SSIDs on the inputs
and the same or different split SSIDs on the repeated outputs

An example of such a device is this AC1750 Repeater
