Volume low on some Channels

Bit of a weird one here, my Dad's been complaining that he can't hear the footy on Sky for a while now, kinda just assumed it's cause he's getting old, but I was round their house on Saturday, & when he switched between the West Ham v Arsenal game on Sky & the women's match on BBC there was a big difference in how loud the BBC was compared to Sky. Is it just Sky Sports gets transmitted at a quieter volume or is there something causing the difference?

  • Hello RizZy

Thanks for taking the time to post in regards to the volume on Sky Sports, we appreciate you taking the time to raise this via the forums.

We appreciate you were only there for a brief period but has your father mentioned this during any other Sky Sports channels? Is it just between live content (like the match) and pre recorded programming?

Hi, Just spoke to my Dad & he thinks it's all the sports channels & programs that seem to be quieter than normal.

When he's asked me before when I was there I flicked around various channels & couldn't really tell much difference as there was all different things on at the time, but with it being two football matches on at the same time the last time I checked it was very noticeably quieter on Sky Sports than BBC.

        Hi RizZy,

Thanks for coming back to us on this one. The channel volumes can be down to quite a few things so it may be difficult to pin point the issue and ultimately, it's not something that Virgin Media control.

Different channels may use varying audio compression techniques and standards. Some channels might prioritize dialogue clarity, while others may focus on music and effects, leading to perceived volume differences.

Audio Formats also play a part and channels may be broadcast in different audio formats (like stereo, Dolby Digital, etc.), which can affect how sound is delivered and perceived. Some formats may be louder or softer compared to others.

Something to try can be going into the TV's audio settings and explore the options. Most TVs have different sound modes, like Cinema, Sports, or Dialogue Boost. You can also adjust the equalizer to balance the sound frequencies

You might also notice that some TV channels sound different from others because of the audio format. For example, a stereo format might sound louder than a surround or high definition format.

Let us know if checking any of this helps 😊

        Thanks,
