On demand HD forcing HDR

Hi,

I have an LG b4 OLED and when watching movies (I don't have 4k subscription) it is forcing the movie to HDR (watching September 5 movie)

can anyone else confirm this is doing this for them? It doesn't look right because of this.

  • When watching HDR you can select the HDR Mode by going to settings, Picture on your LG TV and select one which is best for you, I use cinema home as the default, you can always change depending on what you are watching, the default was much too bright when watching football.

Sorry roy247  but I'm chuckling here.  Don't fall out with me as it's just an observation and the way we are all using our TV's on different settings.

I understand the settings you've chosen for your LG TV  (which are the ones suggested by most tech forums and users)  but those settings wouldn't work for me at all. I was chuckling because to me it's like people's opinions of the 360 being like Marmite, some love it, others hate it.

I don't like Cinema mode or Filmmaker mode at all. To me the picture is far too dark, and I tend to use Sports mode as my default. BUT I don't like Sports mode for watching sports, that's where I use Vivid mode.    I haven't really tried Game mode as to me it makes the Nintendo Switch look washed out.

Hi Dave, Vivid mode in my opinion just over saturates (brightness and contrast set to 100%) the colours and brightness but it all depends on your TV's position and light conditions in the room and the most important thing also is your eyes and what they see.

    Hi IainC86

I have the LG C4 and the HD version of the movie September 5 plays in HDR, the same as your LG B4.  Unfortunately the brightness of the B4 isn't as good so you will notice that the picture is darker.   All LG’s 4K OLED TV's automatically switch to the appropriate settings when they detect an HDR signal.

As far as I know all of Sky's Movies On Demand are now in HDR.

I also have an older LG 50 NANO766QA and that also automatically switches  to the HDR signal when playing September 5, and other Sky movies, also Sky Sports channels.

You could select the 1080p option on the 360 (Settings > Audio & Video > HDMI resolution)

Have you tried the Vivid setting on your LG?

There is a workaround to turn off the HDR on the LG TV's so you get a brighter picture. (You can always reset the picture back to Auto (or whatever you use) again from the same Settings menu)

Press the Settings  cogwheel and on Picture leave the Select mode highlighted, Then enter 1113111 on the smart remote keypad.

This brings up another settings screen.  On the second heading down (EOTF) you can change the setting from Auto to either SDR Gamma, HDR Gamma, ST2084, or HLG.  Experiment with them and see which you feel gives the better picture.

ST2084 turns off the HDR and provides a brighter picture,  but faces etc are too red for my liking. Selecting HLG gives a clearer picture but the colours are brighter without the reddish faces. Selecting HDR Gamma seems to provide a good, bright balanced picture.
