Move to a 360 - Swapping out 2 old boxes?

I've currently got 2 boxes - a (full!) v6 box and a much less used Tivo. I keep getting pop-up adds asking me to change to a new 360.

I've read on here the 360 maybe isn't as great as Virgin suggest, but setting that aside the Tivo is a bit decrepit so I thought maybe it is time to "upgrade".

As the v6 is full of programmes I'd like to watch (I don't mind losing recordings on the Tivo), I asked online chat if I could swap the Tivo for a 360 but keep the v6 for now whilst I work my way through old recordings. Meanwhile I'd use the new 360 to record anything new on. However, it appears the world has moved on!

It seems Virgin don't now provide 2nd boxes as such. Is it the case you can only have one main box plus some sort of satellite box (a Stream box?) for your other room?

Can you still have 2 separate boxes? Or is it Virgin don't want to incur the cost of providing 2 boxes?

Is it possible to twist arms as I'm just out of contract?

Online chat just told me it's all or nothing - both current boxes have to go or I stay as I am. Is it possible to swap the Tivo for a Stream box to run off the v6 - or are Virgin pushing the new boxes so hard that's a non-starter?

 Any thoughts /observations /solutions appreciated.

  • A few bits in here. First off, a migration from TiVo/V6 > TV360 is voluntary. There's a lot of marketing activity around it, and you should expect that to continue.

Second, TiVo & V6 run TiVo-firmware, TV360 runs Horizon-firmware. The two are fundamentally different & incompatible, you cannot mix the two. You either have an all TiVo-house, or an all-Horizon-house - the latter including non-recording Stream.

The most logical change for you would be to get your legacy TiVo-swapped for a V6. You will do extremely well to do this via a direct request, they will encourage TV360 here. Faulty TiVo's are swapped for V6 as a matter of course - does your TiVo have any service faults?

The mention of "all or nothing" is, for once where online-chat is concerned, is more right than wrong. If you migrate to TV360, the V6 is reformatted and software-converted & your TiVo is hardware swapped for a Stream. You thus lose the recording ability on the second box, and this becomes a slave although it won't rely on co-ax anymore.

  • Thanks for that - very useful.

I'll enquire about a 2nd v6 for the Tivo but my fundamental problem is I've a lot of recordings I'd like to watch on my current v6. I can do some house keeping & delete/prioritise my viewing to clear as much as possible but meanwhile I'm sure I'll be wanting to record new programmes as & when.

Maybe I have to wait till the v6 dies, taking my recordings with it, & I'm forced into moving to the 360!

If your faulty TiVo is swapped for a V6, your existing V6 remains unaffected. You can continue to watch recordings on it, or multiroom stream to your other TiVo/V6.
