I have just upgraded from Virgin V6 to 360 and it is excellent, except when trying to access any BBC Sounds apps. I have carried out all the suggestion on Google/AI but nothing is correcting this. I’m told to update the app, but there is no menu for this in Settings. Really not sure what to do next ?

Virgin TV boxes are not like smartphones & tablets that have an app store, who is that's told you to update the app?
What's the problem you're having with the Sounds app, you've not said?
Try a reboot of the 360 and see if that fixes it.
