Can't watch recordings on 360 box

I have two boxes - one works perfectly

The other one, when trying to watch a recording, comes up with the message ....."Virgin TV is offline or not connecting. Turn it on to watch your recordings".....

Turn what on???

Rebooting has not resolved the issue. Similarly I can't delete old recorded programmes - same message appears

Any suggestions greatly appreciated

The box that the recordings are stored on needs to be set to Fast start or Active start, and not turned off, either on the back of the box or at the plug on  the wall.  That way the box should stay in Standby mode where it can still record, allow other boxes to stream recordings that are stored on it, and receive EPG and system updates.

Under Settings > System > Standby power consumption you have 3 choices.
Fast start  - the 360 starts quickly but is less energy efficient
Active start - more energy efficient than fast start but the box takes a little longer to start up
Eco start - the most energy efficient and probably the one you're using. It uses minimal power but takes a while to start.

Setting the box to Eco start is a bit like switching the box off.  It will also prevent VM running any tests, or sending signals to the box should the need arise.
