4k using a 2.1 port?

Have the virgin tv 360 box and just bought a new tv which has speeds upto 144hz. However it only has 4 2.1 hdmi ports. I’ve read that virgin needs 2.2 to run on 120hz. Is this correct? It’s not playing at 120hz, that’s why I’m wondering if that’s the issue?

  • Hi Micmark35

Thanks for posting and welcome back to the community.

    2.1 should be fine 🙂

What is the program / channel you're watching please?

      • No programme in particular. As soon as I connect to my virgin box it comes up on top at screen “60hz”

No, the box has HDMI 2.0b ports, so it supports a maximum resolution of 2160p at a refresh rate of 60Hz.

I believe you need minimum HDMI V2.1 for eARC which the 360 support's.

    All broadcast TV is 50/60Hz.

144Hz is only really a benefit for games consoles

Why do you think the 360 supports eARC? If it does then why is there still no support for Dolby Vision and HDR10+.

The 360 (in my case a converted V6) came with HDMI 2.0a initially, so it hasn't the hardware support for 2.1.

I mistakenly assumed that as my setup is connected using eARC without any problems the 360 supported eARC, but looking at the specs it is only version 2.0a.

eARC is backward compatible with ARC, so an eARC source will work perfectly well with an ARC-only device with the same port and cable, it's just that the additional features of eARC won't be available. There is currently little pressure on anyone to upgrade their STBs to HDMI 2.1 as 2.0b suffices for TV broadcasts and VOD streaming.
