Can anyone recommend a traditional handset home phone that is compatible with VM's fibre network

Before the switch to the fibre network I had a BT Relate 250 home phone with a traditional handset.  The traditional handset was/is important as I suffer from the lasting effects of rheumatoid arthritis which I was diagnosed with when I was three years old.  I'm now 75 and find my manual dexterity is even more limited than it was a year or two ago.

The BT Relate phone worked perfectly well before the switch to fibre as did a BT Big Button phone that we had in my late mother's bedroom.  Since the switch to fibre neither of the BT phones wii work.

My sister tried to help by giving me a phone which was one with a small mobile phone-type handset on a base unit.  I connected it to the hub no problem and it works but I can't get to grips (no pun intended) with the small handset.

Can anyone kindly recommend a traditional handset phone, that they know from experience, is compatible with the fibre network?

Thanks.

Both phones should work with the switch to using the hub instead of a dedicated wire. They just need to be cabled up correctly. You could contact VM who should be able to get them working or employ a local electrician.

Just to dig a little deeper in to the 2 BT Phones now do not work.

It is that these phones do not work because since the switch over from Telephone Wall Sockets to the Telephone via the VM Hub,  nothing has been done to reconnect the internal phone extension sockets of the two BT phones to the VM Hubs telephone socket TEL 1 ?

I also would expect the 2 BT Phones to work with the VM Hub, but they do need to be connected to it.

Can you elaborate on what the problem is with the Relate 250 phone?

That model seems to be from the mid to late 1990s.

As per Client62, when you switch to the phone-via-hub service with VM, all your wall sockets stop working and the only connection is via the TEL1 socket on the back of the hub using the VM-supplied adapter.

With older phones, there is sometimes an issue with the phone not ringing for incoming calls. That can mostly be fixed with a change of adapter. Check the 'Mode' switch under the phone is set to 'TB'.

Regulars here would recommend a cordless phone system for use with the landline via the VM hub. Plug the base station into the hub and use cordless handsets around your home where needed. Big button versions are available for ease of use.

    Hi Monotype 👋.

Thanks for reaching out to us, sorry to hear of the issues that your mother is facing with the new handset. There is a handset that has the heft of the Relate 250 that is cordless and does have big buttons but not as big as the Relate but is built robustly for those with accessible needs such as the contrast for vision and the ability to connect headphones as well as a large external speaker for hearing and the handset itself is that of the traditional phones with some heft so it can be griped with ease and this is the BT 4600 which does also feature a nuisance blockers and a base unit with large buttons for volume and answer machine.

The second phone which is like the BT 4600 but has a base unit with a red flashing light is the Swissvoice Extra 2355, both can be obtained from your local high street electrical retailer as well as online and are at a good price to suit. We hope this helps.

If you want an upgrade then do as I did: buy the BT Decor 2600 v2. It does everything you need and includes features the Relate 250 lacks such as answering machine, call blocking, speakerphone, LCD and contacts storage. And it works via my hub's TEL 1 port.
