Vodafone 6e

I have issues with my WiFi speeds, there's another really long post about this on here, but I can't get any help that improves my issue.

My question is could I buy a 2nd hand Vodafone 6e router and put my hub 5 in modem mode and use it?

Will it work?

My WiFi is severely congested due to neighbour having lots and lots of cameras, access points etc.

Anyone have any experience using the Vodafone 6e router in this way with Virgin? I'm desperate, I've tried everything else and had multiple engineers visit

The Vodafone router may be locked and you would be unable to change the settings. Also check it’s not an ADSL only router and ask why it is being sold. It would probably be better to spend your money on new equipment.

You might take a squint at this OP's history of gripe worthy posts :o)

That’s why I asked if anyone had any experience with that particular router, you obviously haven’t, so why bother replying

They are advising you not to waste your money on something that won't work. You are very unlikely to get a direct answer to your question.

  • I was asking in hope that some one else may have already tried this. I'll look into buying a router

Why don't you try the Vodafone forum?

Make sure you can return it if it’s not the solution. Going by your other thread, you need a wired wifi access point to cover your weak area.  With around 12 other SSID’s on your scan id say your area is congested…

  • I have seen on another forum advice on getting an Xbox series X to get better speeds on 5Ghz by disabling "protected management frames"

After a quick look around it seems I can't change this on Virgin? Does anyone have any knowledge on this that could possibly help?

The Xbox series X is 5ft from the hub 5, it's connected via 5Ghz but downloading games never goes higher than 150Mbps and speed tests are the same. It should be much, much higher than this.

The is why PMF is required:

WPA3 enforces PMF, which may disconnect legacy or IoT clients. To avoid this, we strongly recommend a separate WPA2 broadcast with PMF disabled.

Unfortunately VM do not allow hardly any ‘tailoring’ of WiFi parameters they think it’s too complicated for users and would cause lots of customer service calls. My router, Ubiquiti UDM Pro allows about 30 parameters for each WiFi SSID of which there are 8 available.

"My router, Ubiquiti UDM Pro allows about 30 parameters for each WiFi SSID"

Out of interest do you change any of them for better speed or stability?

It baffles me why you'd use Wi-Fi rather than an Ethernet cable for a device just a few feet away from the hub.

do i really need to give a full explanation? I can and will connect this xbox via ethernet, but as there's another bedroom with an Xbox further down the hall in another bedroom which cant be easily cabled, with the same issues Id like to try and find out why the wifi speeds are so bad, not just to the closest Xbox that's just a few feet away but across most of the house (which didn't have this issue before Virgin upgraded the speed to 1Gb). think big picture

I'd suspect Channel, Bandwidth and Transmission Power as a start, and perhaps Airtime Fairness?

  • I recently asked a colleague who has the same 1Gb plan from Virgin to run a test close to the hub and away from it on another floor and she got approx 900Mbps on both tests. Obviously ask Holmes are different but I'm sick of being told to expect 150Mbps speeds

So many Xboxes you have why you still choose to use the rubbish hub in router mode and its wifi...

      2 xboxes, not many really.

Rubbish hub you say? That's not what Virgin tell me - why should i be forced to buy even more equipment not to mention I've already ran out of sockets to plug all these devices into, and who wants electrical extensions running everywhere? not us. I'd just like it to work as advertised, as it did before the speed upgrade, for 3 years.

Why don't you ask for a hub 4 maybe that would be better for you?

"why should i be forced to buy even more equipment"

wait didn't you want to get Vodafone 6e router? or is it you just want to buy a ISP router that works so you can say to VM there hubs bad and not buy a 3rd party router?
