Upgraded to Gig1 but max speed only 500Mbps

Hello guys,

Some info for you. Just got Gig1 about 2 weeks ago. Using a Hub 5, modem mode with TP-Link Deco M4 for mesh wifi. I use wired connections for static machines like the desktop PC so I do all of my speed tests from there. I've notice that the Hub 5 will drop connection entirely but recover after a few minutes.

Speed tests vary from 350Mbps (Cloudflare) to 500Mbps (Ookla Speedtest). Gigabit switch capacities support a max of 900Mbps so should be seeing roughly that number. Hope someone is able to take a look at this info and give some advice on this. I reckon it's a bad coax cable. For info before upgrading I had a Hub 3 and it used to get several T3 timeouts per and but wasn't noticeably degrading my internet experience (it did hang on some occasions though). Hope someone clever can offer some advice.

I'll pop the Hub status tables on the posts below

Thanks very much!

  • OK I think I found the speed problem.

It was the TP Link Deco app QoS settings. So Ookla speed tests now show 900down/100up which makes sense given I have gigabit switches when QoS settings were tweaked. Rebooting the Deco units seemed to fix it, but it took a few tries for it to work. Can't say I'm a fan of the app, it really sucks because settings don't get saved. Oh and apparently you can't really switch QoS off so I just set it to a value of 1000/1000 and it appears to be ok.

Don't know about the connection dropouts still, that problem doesn't look fixed to me so I'll report back later (and see if I can get the BQM graphs to show).

Are you using the 2.5Gbps port on the HUB?

If you are, can you try one of the gigabit ports instead?

  • I would think you would need to switch back to router mode and connect directly to the Virgin hub using ethernet cable and do a speed test before they will do anything.

" I use wired connections for static machines like the desktop PC"

Wired at 1Gb/s to the first Deco M4 i.e. the one that is directly
network cable connected to the VM Hub ?

If No, wired to any other Wi-Fi linked Deco M4 is a PC using an external Wi-Fi adaptor.

For the PC it works like this: Hub 5 > Deco > Gigabit switch > Gigabit switch > Deco > PC. No wireless backhaul, all wired. I'll give it a go by just setting the Hub to router mode and connecting it to the switch.

In Modem or Router mode ...

Check in the Configuration tab of the VM Hub to see what speed profile is loaded,
the Upstream & Downstream rate is shown in bits per second.   So for 1Gb/s we are expecting to see a figure a bit above 1000,000,000 in the Downstream max traffic rate.

In Router mode this test link will show the speed to the VM Hub and at the device.

    https://www.samknows.com/realspeed/

Once the test begins click on: Run full test to include: Latency, Jitter, Packet loss & Upload speed.  The speed at the Hub should reflect your subscription.

Thus test is also available as a mobile app called : Samknows Realspeed
