Why have I been charged?

I have been around the merry-go-round and just can't be bothered anymore, I am well out of contract and cancelled my service with VM due to take place on Sat 15th June (I have confirmation of conversations). This morning I received my bill for £72.24 (I know!!) as if nothing has happened. When I log into my account there is nothing on there about the cancellation, I literally just want to go, please respond asap.
For context I have been a customer for nearly two decades ~(Diamond -> NTL -> Virgin) and I simply want to pay a fair price for broadband, I don't want TV I don't need a landline I just want a fair price to simply have the product that I want without the BS. I have now bitten the bullet, tested a 5G router with a data sim (I get over 100Mb) and I want to simply walk for £20 month.
I hope someone can offer some advice.
