What is the best time to contact VM for a deal?

My current contract ends 2 September and am aware the price will jump up considerably which is making me consider going to SKY and full fibre.  At what point in time should I contact VM to ask about deals if I do decide to stay?

My plan now is M125 but as am with o2 for my Sim it was bumped up to M250 and my o2 data was doubled to 10 GB and I only use 2GB anyway so doubling my o2 data was no bonus in my case.

Thank you for any tips.

  • Hi scarletp

Generally better offers are forthcoming if you are out of contract, or within the last 30 days of your current contract and you call to place a cancellation request rather than to regrade or negotiate a new price.

Do your homework first, be aware of what you want and the price you are prepared to pay, and price up similair speeds/packages with other suppliers.

You should select options 1, 4 and 4 when dialing 150 from a VM landline, or 0345 454 1111 from any other phone, which should put you through to retentions (thinking of leaving)

They have better offers than the front line agents.  Although you might speak to a first line agent to begin with tell them you are wanting to speak to cancellations and they should then pass you through to the actual retentions agent.

Thinking about your O2 data, if out of contract  with O2 then you can change your O2 sim without it affecting your VM Volt contract, however do a little homework first and check the pricing on the O2 website, and then compare that pricing on other sites.

Although you don't need this amount of data you could keep your Volt benefits by purchasing a 32GB (other tarifs are also available) O2 sim which is currently £8.00 a month from uswitch < here > Looking at 12 month sim pricing on the O2 website it would cost £19 for 3GB and £20.99 for 10GB.  The 24 month contracts on the O2 site cost £16 for both 3GB and 30GB sims. (Even if your sim isn't out of contract just yet it's a good idea to check the pricing on the uswitch site when youi are out of contract)

With uswitch.com, you get the option to login to your O2 account, then if you select that you don't want a new SIM card sending out it lets you keep your current O2 number and starts a new 12 month contract at that new price which nulls out the price you were paying O2.

  • If you have full fibre available why would you want to stay with VM's inferior offer?

Yes, I totally see the sense in opting for full fibre.  We have had SKY (for TV) approx 20 years but about 18 months ago my O/H spoke to them and enquired about broadband speeds. They told us they could only offer 60Mbps so we naturally didn't accept.  Now everytime I google for broadband deals at my address it now appears SKY do offer various speeds of full fibre but of course that will be for new Sky customers which does not really apply to us.  Will ask hubbie to ring them for a quote.  Thank you

      newapollo,

Thank you for all your invaluable information.  I will bear it all in mind and maybe in a couple of months I will have sorted things to my liking.

Do you really need to limit your choice by staying with 02?.

Here's one alternative. Move your phone to the cheapest monthly deal on EE (incidentally it has better coverage). Then move broadband to EE and they give you unlimited data on your mobile.

Check other suppliers, you may find similar or better deals.

Grateful for something else to consider.  Never considered EE for anything but will look into it.

EE is BT under another name.

      Thank you yet again Lee,

Good to see you are still on here.  I am not a regular but when I do need to post I have always had my problems dealt with by the Forum team and regular community members offering a wealth of useful info.  Yet again responses have been of value.

Your contract is not ending, but your minimum-term is. With the minimum-term ending, so are some time-limited discounts.

You are not getting the best deals because you are not investigating VM's bundles of broadband, TV, phone and mobile. Basically the more you bundle the less you pay per bundle item. You already have broadband and O2, so adding TV and landline will give you another Volt bundle. (And yes, adding landline might make the bundle cheaper than not having it.)

So, as advised, call next month (choosing "thinking of leaving) and see what you get offered. Note: this will be a 24-month contract.
