Virgin don't work within the open reach network (like BT, Sky,Talk talk, Plusnet etc) so when you join Virgin, you have to contact the old provider yourself to cancel and close the account.

Hi Charlie2222,
Welcome to our forums and our services. As mentioned by waseem20a, you would have to contact your old provider to process a cancellation. If you only need a landline with them, they can work with you on a resolution. Unfortunately, Virgin Media is unable to assist with this. This is unless you processed your order via One Touch Switch. Please let us know if this is the case and we will be happy to look into this for you.
Thanks,

Virgin processed a purchase order when we signed up but didn't complete it, so they have started the process to take over our old account

Unfortunately I need to keep my landline for other purposes. If I cancel talk talk they also cancel the land line

The best way to keep your phone number safe is to sign up with a separate VOIP supplier and ask them to take over your landline. That way the number is yours regardless how many times you change broadband supplier. I used Andrews & Arnold, but there are others.
