Cancel and my partner join as new customer

my contract is coming to an end and since virgin have zero interest in giving me better deal after 20 years plus with them .

I am rarely at home anyway with work but if my partner wants virgin services and pays for it herself, can she get the new customer deals

  • Common theme here is that whenever someone at VM “double checks” this, they come up with something new.

Let me tell you what is actually the case.

Person 1 can give notice to cancel and immediately place a new order in the name of person 2 at the same address. How do I know this?

I did it, and have done it repeatedly for a number of years now. Disconnection date was October 15th for the old account, install date for the new services was October 16th.

The VM retentions drones tell you that you can’t do this - and in some cases accuse you of committing fraud, breaking the law, and playing the system but it’s just their way of being able to keep you tied in to a deal they generate - to get their commission.

The thing about 90 days, absolute garbage, and tends to vary based on who you’re speaking with at VM; I’ve been told 30 days, 3 months and up to 6 months. The fact of it is that once one contract with VM and person 1 ends, person 2 is a new customer - at that point neither are currently bound by any terms and conditions - and an address can’t be a party to entering into a contract.

  • Hi all. I'm currently in a contract but due to the price increases I have until next week to re-evaluate my package & cancel/change if I wish.

The account is in my name but is paid from a joint bank account with my wife (same surname). My wife is a NHS nurse & it appears she can get some good deals via her Blue Light benefits. So I'm contemplating cancelling my contract & starting a new contract in her name (assuming retentions wont match her deal).

So my query to you helpful people is: what will be the process I need to follow to do this?

As I see it; I need to ring & cancel my contract first, assuming the won't match her deal. Then get my wife to call next day & set-up a new contract to start the day after mine ends? The new contract will be paid from an account solely in her name.

Am I on the right track & can anyone see any problem with this? Will it make a difference that we currently pay the bill from a joint account even though the contract is only in my name?

    Any advice is greatly appreciated

Not sure how different it is with you being allowed to cancel due to price increase scenario. I had to give my 30 day notice, when I got the cut off date, my partner just did it all online. I don't know if doing it over the phone is going to get tricky. I think the online application is less hassle.

Just using the "moving here" option once the address has been put in online. At some point during checkout you are given the option to choose a date. We went for self install and chose for the equipment was to be delivered the day after my cut off. Hope that makes sense.

The bank thing should be no issue at all anyway.

My old contract was paid from my sole account and the new contract of my wife's is also paid from my sole account.

      Hope that helps 👍

        Brilliant, thanks for that.

As for cancelling due to the price increase. If they increase prices mid-contract you are legally entitled to cancel or change your contract (according to Martin Lewis), plus it says on the increase notification I can do this.

As for my wife ringing up to set-up a new contract; that's my mistake. She would do it online via Blue Light. Apologies.

So that's brilliant advice, thank you.

Also, I assume if I include Sky sports I would get a number of log-ins to Sky Sports app? My son lives separately so I've been led to believe he would be able to log-in to Sky as a Virgin customer & put in my password to watch Sky simultaneously to myself?

        Thanks again

Presume this still works, get my cancellation date, and the wife to setup a new contract to start the next day.

What's the downtime like, and do they send out a new hub? If so does that generally arrive on time?

Another question, will we receive a Hub 5? Currently have a Hub 3 we use in modem mode. Currently M350 may go M500 for faster upload.

      Hi Ron-ski

You won't receive a hub 5. Customers on the gig 1 package receive either a hub 4 or hub 5 (depending on stock levels) you will receive a hub 3 as that is all that is needed for M350 and M500 speeds.

Also, if you currrently have a VM landline then you will lose your VM phone number when the old account  cancels and you will be issued with a new landline number.

Also any VM, ntl, blueyonder email addresses that you currently will be deleted 90 days after the current contract is closed. They can't be transferred over to a new account. So now is as good a time as any to backup any emails that you need to keep, and set up and advise contacts of that current VM address of your new contact email address (which won't be a VM email as they no longer issue email accounts to new customers)

Also in the unlikely event that there are capacity problems in your area then VM may not be taking on any new connections, or they may be unable to supply speeds above M350.

New equipment will be supplied so that will be a main 360 box and if a second TV box is needed it will be  a 360 mini box which doesn't have a hard drive. (Tivo and V6 boxes are no longer supplied to new customers)

Thanks Dave, had my own domain name and separately hosted emails for a long time, no Virgin TV or phone, it's purely an Internet connection.

Let me see if I have this right.I have just cancelled my Mega Volt package (my contract has expired),I have given 1 months notice. If I understand correctly my Wife can now take out a package at our address in her name as new customer from 1 day after my current services are disconnected

That's the way I understood it, but I never had to in the end, as long as you have got marketing calls turned on, they will call and offer a good deal before the 30 days is up.

This is a great forum, I am so pleased I stumbled across it. Just so I am clear about this changing of account names (Virgin want to nearly double my contract and are giving me a paltry dicount if I take a lesser package):

Today is June 14. My contract ends in July 7. So if I give VM 30 days note today, that means my contract ends on July 12, is that correct?

My wife then asks for a new service to start on JUly 13?

What happens to all the old equipment? The boxes and the hub etc? I assume the person who comes to install the new kit will see that there is still a bunch of old kit around?

    @Nowayjose

No one will come to install the new equipment, it will just be posted out, you swap it over and return the old equipment in the box supplied.

Once you've given notice make sure you have marketing calls turned on, retensions may phone you with a price you find acceptable.

  • Hi all

Is this information about giving 30days notice still valid?

Contract ends on may 9th.  As others have mention I don't want to be without service a days.

You always have to give 30 days notice.

      Hello Dan1988.

If the account is going to be at the same address in an alternative name, you will have to allow the current account to close and wait for the new account to be activated.

Probably looking at a day's loss of service. It's just not possible to have 2 active accounts running at the same address.

The good thing is as you will already have a connection point, we can send the new equipment out as a self installation.

      Hope that helps?

So I could give the 30 days notice then arrange for the self installation kit to be delivered on day 31 for activation?

  • What I did before I gave them my 30 day notice was work out when that 30 would end. I then checked installation dates by putting a neighbours address who does not have Virgin. If there is a slot for the day you want, go for the 30 day notice and jobs a good un. At the worst, you might be without for a couple of days but it's rare as far as I have read. They want you installed asap where it makes them money 👍 Good luck
