VM phishing email but VM aren't interested

I get this email spam email regularly and I forward on to the phishing email address at VirginMedia, and this is their standard response:

Thanks for checking in with us. We’re only able to confirm if emails sent from Virgin Media O2 are genuine. As the email you received appears to come from someone else, you’ll need to contact that company using their official contact details to check if it’s real.

Treat the email with caution – don’t click on any links or share personal details until you’ve confirmed it’s genuine.

Take care,
The Virgin Media O2 team

Does VM not do anything about scammers pretending to be VM any more? Or is this just another indication that VM is washing its hands of its email service altogether and you just can't be bothered to do anything about it?

How do you think VM would be able to find the scammers?

Read what’s happening. It’s VM that are saying I need to report the phishing attempt to the company that is being impersonated … which is VM 🤦‍♂️

What they choose to do about it is up to them, but I’m sure they could be more proactive in stopping these emails getting through to my VM email account in the first place.

For context, I don’t get that kind of half-**bleep** BS from Apple, Microsoft or my mobile provider when I report phishing attempts to them. It’s only VM that try to fob me off.

VM publishes example scam messages at the top of the security forum

Security matters | Virgin Media Community

Your example may well end up there at some point. The examples are all fairly generic and follow similar styles and themes, as does the example you have posted.

I posted it because VM are telling me I need to contact the company being impersonated … which of course is VM 🤦‍♂️

Although no updates to this for a month an a half so either, there have been no phishing attacks against VM customers (hint: there actually have) or VM have simply abandoned  bothering. I suspect the latter.

Yes, but it’s more a case that VM simply cannot do anything, even if they wanted to.

Of course there is. Just for starters they could post the images I’ve shared here at the top of the forum to warn other customers. But they’ve chosen to ignore it.

They also encourage customers to report phishing attempts. Why bother if there’s nothing they can do?

With more sophisticated spam filtering software that could read the words “Virgin Media” in an image they could prevent these emails from reaching customers.

Unfortunately, VM are winding down their email provision, so there’s not much incentive for them to invest in it or provide anything more than the most basic level of service until those people still using it give up.

JPL8 The best way to report this type of email is to forward it as an attachment to report@phishing.gov.uk

That’s exactly what I did. And I reported it to the VM phishing email address
