Think my email account has been hacked?

HI,

I have recived a few emails this weekend  saying someone with my email account has tried to open various social media accounts and a catalogue account . i am now a tad scared about the security on my email account, can anyone help please?

  • It sounds like you might be dealing with a potential email hack. Here are some steps you can take to secure your account:

    1. Change Your Password: Immediately change your email password to something strong and unique. Use a mix of upper and lowercase letters, numbers, and special characters.
    2. Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA): This adds an extra layer of security by requiring a second form of verification, such as a code sent to your phone.
    3. Check for Unauthorized Activity: Look for any unfamiliar devices or locations in your email account's activity log.
    4. Scan for Malware: Run a full scan on your devices using antivirus software to ensure there are no malicious programs installed.
    5. Update Security Questions: Change your security questions to something only you would know and avoid easily guessable answers.
    6. Warn Your Contacts: Let your friends and family know that your email may have been compromised so they can be cautious of any suspicious messages.

I have a chromebook so bit confused why this may have happened as i always thought chromebooks has built in security. the issue is the are using my email so when I receiving emails to my VM account saying your password for accounts i dont even have has been changed and i tried to mark it as scam and block it, i cant as i cant block my own email!

i did change the password on my vm account and other accounts. the other thing is that they sent me an email saying they knew my password was and mentioned an old password i had previously used and thats what bothered me..how did they know that?
