Parental Controls work for Hubs in Router mode and for devices connecting via DHCP and using the default VM DNS.

A change of DNS, or use of a VPN, or use of Apple Relay will cause a device to bypass VM Parental Controls & many kids are amazingly well versed in these settings as most ISPs controls can be defeated with a couple of clicks.

  • not a helpful reply above. They are not working for basic usage, no VPN, no DNS changes, the default settings with controls turned on should simply work.

  • i have tried online chat - absolutely useless. i said it doesnt work she asked me what site i want to access. I rang up and they said VM only blocks official sites, not third party sites e.g. third part porn sites. I told her that doesnt even make sense! They have no idea what they're talking about

To get you over the hurdle whilst VM fix the issue, you can manually set the DNS on the device(s) to use Cloudflare Adult and Malware filters. Set the DNS to 1.1.1.3 and 1.0.0.3 manually. This will bypass the VM DNS servers until the issue is fixed.

To use the same Cloudflare Adult and Malware filters on an Android device
set "Private DNS" to : family.cloudflare-dns.com

A few more things to check out that are not mentioned so far :

    1) In the VM Online Account ( not the Connect app ) confirm you are  able to set and save the list of websites to be blocked ?

Or, do you have the most common VM Parental Controls problem of facing a web page error message when attempting to save changes to the settings ?

    2) Is your VM Hub in Router or Modem mode because I don't expect the Parental Controls to work in Modem mode especially if the 3rd party Router is using a Public DNS.

    3) What device are you testing on...

By chance is it an Apple device that now have Apple Relay enabled by default ?

Apple Relay is a form of VPN that will bypass Parental Controls.

    4) Does the Public IP reported for your device match
the IPv4 IP shown in the menus of the VM Hub ?

The URL below must return the same IP as shown in the VM Hub
and the ISP must be Virgin Media Limited

    https://whatismyipaddress.com/

If the ISP is not VM, a VPN or proxy are in play and Parental Controls will be bypassed.
