Help email account hacked

My virginmedia account was closed many months ago.  However, my associated virginmedia email accout has remained active.(It should have been deactivated 3 months after closing the account.)  I have now learned it has been hacked and being misused.  I am unable to reset the password on the account as when I try to login the account is not recognised.  Called Virginmedia support and was told they cannot close the email account as my account has been closed!!!!  Can somebody please advise how I get this email account closed down.
