Windows preview updates from last night
I got a lot of problems with these updates. stuck on 0% downloading
Tried all the recommended fixes (troubleshooter, stopping and starting services, deleting the update cache etc;)
with no luck. Then I went to Windows Catalogue, manually downloaded and installed the msu files
that worked this morning.

That was the eventual fix, after a lot of faffing about
So this morning up and running with the latest preview build

I've had 50 blue screens since 27th November.

I was about to post a reply here, but my 51st BSOD had other ideas.

There is a broken USB port on it which arcs occasionally, so it could be that. I no longer use it and I've been toying with fixing it myself.

That's is really bad, probably old hardware no longer able to cope with modern day loads

I had problems with this - it came up with several error messages, refusing to install. After trying again, it completed the download successfully. However, after sticking on 100% for several minutes, I got a BSOD and tried it again. The process started again and seemed to have passed off without any problems but stopped on 35% updated, and Windows seemed to boot up normally. It ran normally, but there was no desktop, just a black screen.
Explorer was running normally, but still no desktop, I fired up Task Manager (which ran normally) to see what was going on. The desktop folder was intact, so nothing was wrong with the file system. I tried resetting the graphics (CTRL-shift-Windows key and B; the screen flickers and you get a beep) which didn't work. I ran sfc /scannow and DISM fix image. The desktop eventually worked and the whole process took 5½ hours...
