I got an email from a company from the distance past which may be fake

I got an email from a company from the distance past which may be fake, had 2 now and it is from many years ago that I was in contact with them, the company does still exist but I have not clicked on the email as it seems suspicious and keeps repeating, so best to register with the company web site  direct again which I have done rather than via the unsolicited email which may be phishing.

  • Hi Alf28.

Sounds like you're getting to grips with it. What spam filters are you using, I used to use MailWasher Pro.   I haven't used in in about two years now, I didn't renew my subscription as mail spam wasn't worrying me anymore, I see it's now up to version eight.

I have now started to use  filters in  settings to action -discard specific spam emails and pick out a word in the subject as the condition or from a particular domain, but also filtering emails that I do want to the inbox to avoid discard if needed.

The option to discard means repeat spam emails will not appear in the inbox.

Many of my email will repeat over and over again such as subjects, spins, coffee, solar and many are via gmail.com so I now target them to discard.

I have used the words coffee, solar and domain gmail.com.

I use other free emails  and to log in, now so just try to keep my old ntlworld.com primary email clean and avoid the spam, emails. These are usually phishing emails after bank details  or passwords or can  download malicious software if you click on links.

Discard will delete the email and a powerful way to eliminate spam emails but needs careful setting up of filters to avoid mistakes, so the sequence of the filters has to be in order to have correct operation

Just to add that I get recent emails asking for payment verification which appear to be scams or someone using my email for payments. I just ignore this as the sender address is unknown to me.

Also some spam emails will have the words reward.

I discard them by using keywords such as payment reward, congratulations etc.

I would hope like to delete out this old  ntlworld.com email as it  gets loads of spam but VM link it to my account so it can not not removed and is a worry that I have no option to remove it as in normal email providers.

I noticed that my VM spam emails reduced in 2025 by approx 80% the figures were -

2022 -414 spam emails  (6 months) approx 16 per week

        2023 - 2634 spam emails (12 months) approx 50 per week

        2024 - 2581 spam emails (12 months) approx 49 per week

2025 - 460 spam emails  (12 months) approx 9 per week (reduced by approx 80%)

        2025 - 18 spam emails ( upto 9th jan) approx 14 per week

Spam emails figures are average figures. I think VM have reduced the spam a lot or the spammers have been blocked.

The spam emails continue, but have reduced and originate worldwide.

I now try to discard the repeating spam emails using filters effectively, seem to work, so hope to get even less spam in2026.

My recent payment verification scam originated from an IP address In Italy.

It’s always best to check the mail headers they can often identify spam. I use Apple Mail for reading my email and only get about 1 spam message a month and never see any spam in my inbox. Apple is very good at getting rid of real spam messages before you even see them. I have an email provider that lets you have unlimited mail boxes, so I use a system like ‘bank@myurl’, ‘gas@myurl’ and ‘vmc@myurl’. This readily identifies any companies that have ‘sold’ my email address.

In some cases hackers can use your email address and this can be for "illegal activity"  such as imperonation, identity teft, fraud, unauthorised access, data protection breach.

Hackers/spammers can also set up new email addresses in your own name and send spam to you or use this for other purposes, the object being to get your attention or may be impersonation.

In some cases hackers will take over an email address which is more serious and difficult to recover, so tight security is needed.

I have had that happen a few times, and often find someone has used my email for things such as purchases, dating websites etc, it can happen to any email. In some cases it may be a mistake of typing but always check out anything unusual.

Sometimes your email adess can be used by hackers  to register your account with a company to sign up for things by hackers, so you get an email which will ask for your details (phishing) and may be linked to fake websites

If that occurs change paswords and check email account security and check out any strange events but avoid clinking links in the email.

The old email contact that resumed after many years appears genuine, I can only think that they have found my email address on a database and resumed contact to see if I am still there.

Any unusual emails could be spam and need careful checking or deletion.

Email/data from the past the distant  past can still exist stored for many years as electronic records on servers or even home comuters, or on hackers data bases.

Email security is imprtant so I use 2FA  verification, this avoids hackers taking over emails and changing the account details, this also can prevent hackers finding your data and setting up accounts, emails etc using your details, I have seen emails with my name as the email address but a different named owner which could be hackers.

Email that is from my own ntlworld email address was picked up as spam with a double taging and best not opened, it had attachments and giff images attached, sent using outlook software from Poland.

Not sure what it was, so just I ignored this email.

The spam emails are from unknown sources and best avoided by not doing anything with them.

I do not get many now, perhaps several spams in a week, but it is amazing how emails can be spoofed easily to apear to be from a known person, even yourself.
