I have been a VM customer for over 12 years now and the majority if the time it's been great.
As GoSlow pointed out - people only come to the forums when they have issues or need support.
Just upgraded to the 1gig package and I am not getting the speeds advertised even over 2.5gig. I suspect my local cabinet has a lot of traffic to it and the cable laid to my property is over 15 years old too.
On the whole, though I have been happy with VM.

Cable shouldn't be an issue, my old NTL cable would have been older. Setup a BQM to monitor the incoming circuit. This should show up any over subscription problems. www.thinkbroadband.com/ping
have you read this thread, long winded, but explains why you may only get 960 instead of 1140 down. sadly there is expense involved to get the other 200 mbits. Plus your device & wired equipment needs to support 2.5 Gbit or faster.
