I have narrowed this problem down to the Postbox email client and the Virgin SMTP server. According to the tech support guy at Postbox, I have a very old version of their software which does not work with "modern security protocols", which is why it can no longer talk to the Virgin server. It is indeed a very old version, but I pointed out that until last Friday it was working perfectly, but suddenly stopped working on Saturday. He replied that the Virgin server will have "evolved" (that was the word he used), which is why it stopped working. So, the question is: Did the Virgin SMTP server recently "evolve" in some way (whatever that means)? Or, more sensibly, has there been a recent configuration change on the server that might have suddenly caused this problem? I know I can upgrade to a newer version of Postbox, but that would mean upgrading to a newer version of Windows, which in turn would mean upgrading my hardware. I can probably find other ways of sending out email, but I thought I would post the above information in the hope that it might cast some light on the issue. Mike Re: Loss of Email - F010762348 Ashleigh_C, thanks for that. You're right about my post in the other thread. I did that accidentally. I tacked that post to somebody else's question rather than starting a new thread. Sorry about the confusion. Mike Re: Loss of Email - F010762348 A quick update: When trying to send emails from the Postbox email client, I am seeing exactly the same problem with another SMTP server (supplied by my hosting company; not Virgin). On that basis, it appears that the fault lies with the email client rather than Virgin. However, sending from Thunderbird is OK with the non-Virgin SMTP server. With Virgin, the messages still fail. So it could be a Virgin problem after all. I hope this makes sense. Re: Loss of Email - F010762348 Steven_L, thanks for your reply. I am now seeing exactly the same problem with another SMTP server (supplied by my hosting company; not Virgin). I am also seeing that the problem does not occur with the Virgin server but with a different email client. So it looks like the problem is with the email client rather than with Virgin. Thanks anyway for your help. Mike Re: Loss of Email - F010762348 I have been using Virgin Media SMTP for all outgoing emails for several years. As of today, I am seeing this error message whenever I try to send a message: Sending of message failed. The message could not be sent because the connection to SMTP server smtp.virginmedia.com timed out. This happens with both my email cients (Thunderbird and Postbox) and to all recipients' addresses. I have not changed any settings in the email clients, or in my firewall or antivirus or anywhere else. Can anyone help? Thanks in advance. Mike Re: Loss of Email - F010762348 Apologies. I think I accidentally tacked my message (above) on to someone else's thread. Please ignore the message. I'll post it again in a new thread.
