Switching from broadband + Landline to a VOIP system

I have four Panasonic portable phones with a master? holder with Answerphone facilities that I do not bother using as it does NOT indicate when there are messages.

Any way would like to switch over to using voip service so the question is on the basis that I need an adaptor to connect between existing phone port on the VM modem to the adaptor and the adaptor to the router (a ASUS model) what do I need and do I need to also use some kind of service provider ? and at what kind of fixed cost :

If you have a telephone service from VM, your phone will still work from the Hub in modem mode.  If you want to move to a different VoIP supplier, you will need an ATA Gateway for the phones, something like a Grandstream HT802.

Nope, you are missing the point - I want to switch from using a regular land line via VM to using VOIP and that has no cost for calls just a basic monthly fee.  It appears that VM does not offer a VOIP service.

May be because that do not make money out of the calls despite the fact that their landline service is no doubt using it any way.

The new VM telephone service is a VoIP service, they just don't call it that.  There are many VoIP suppliers on the market, but I'm not sure if calls would be free? Most include a certain amount for a monthly fee?

I take just my Broadband from Virgin and my phone service was provided by BT via a landline.

I've recently switched my phone service to Vonage VOIP using Virgin Broadband as the carrier. I have a 1000minutes a month of free calls at a cost of under £8 /month. Other offers are available. Vonage supplied a Grandstream HT801, which has plugs for both the ethernet and phone ( A Panasonic KX-XTGJ324E) Vonage ported my BT number across and after 6 weeks I'm very happy.  - I had to make one adjustment to my Netgear Router and the rest was simply plug and go.

Make sure you have a lowish ping rate on your broadband, ideally around 15msec is fine, but upto 50msec is tolerable.
