Virgin cable stops 200m up the street

Stevenk1
Tuning in

I've been with Virgin and predecessors for over 20 years, and have recently moved. As before I was told online I can be reconnected and even signed up to the new 1GB deal. However the engineer arrived and told me there was no connection available. He pointed to a house about 200m away and said it stopped there. There is a green box outside my house and even an old Cabletel manhole nearby but they are both empty. It seems that when the residents were asked in the 1990s(!!) They said they didn't want connected and that was that. How do I get an official clarification from Virgin about whether they ever plan to try and connect again? I live in a major town.

My guess is that the road either was or still is Private & not adopted by the local authority. Private roads require complicated wayleave agreements in order to be connected to the network. You now have a situation where VM are no longer extending legacy HFC networks as the technology used to deliver it will shortly become obsolete. VM are moving from traditional DOCSIS cable internet to full fibre XGS-PON over the next few years. When the fibre overbuild is eventually installed & switched on you will have more chance of getting connected

Hi Paul, thanks for your answer. Unfortunately I can't do that as the link shows that it is available at my address. But the engineer was adamant, both the green box outside my window and the Cabletel manhole on the pavement are empty! It really is a bind.

That's a pain but not unknown. The cable companies tended to abruptly run out of money leaving empty ducts and cabinets.

They aren't going to extend the cable network to you and given it reckons you're already covered the full fibre build won't cover you. The overbuild of existing cable areas will be interesting when they find your box is empty!

Team need to get your address off the list of areas already covered. Is there a little box in the pavement outside your property too, right at the border with your property?

VM's new fibre network is being built by utilising existing ducts - hence the budget of only £100 per premise passed. If the ducting is in place outside your properties and VM believes that your area is seviceable, then I would think that there is quite a good chance that the fibre cabinets will be installed for your street.

Yes it's against my front garden wall! With the cabletel manhole beside it...
