Very slow wifi

Have had an issue with very slow wifi, upload 0.45mb/s. Download 6.54mb/s. And intermittent connection. These test were completed sat at the side of the router. I have spoken to someone on the virgin chat, but got disconnected, before they could help. I have m500 broadband and only live in a small bungalow. In two rooms I get nothing. Can someone help please
