Email farce with Virgin

Hi all

Some months ago I was told that I could not access my account with a ntlworld email address - I had to use my work email to log in. As I have more than one ntl email, I had to set up gmail accounts in order to access them all.

Today - I get an email to say I won't be able to use these to access my account and will need to use my virgin media mail - I don't have a virgin media mail - nor do I want one - especially since I already set up all the gmail addresses.

Why are they doing this? It takes forever to get through to a real person on the phone and then they just read off a script. I have been with this company for 25 years and this might just be the last straw!!

I am not signing up for ANOTHER email address - so how can I access my account after the end of the month? Does anyone know if there is an alternative?

  • Hey Theneils, thank you for reaching out and we are sorry to hear about the email issue.

As mentioned by Coenoby these are the current plans.

This is my take on what VM's latest change means for you and me because I have received that email for 2 of my VM accounts I use for testing purposes on this forum.

    1. "I am not signing up for ANOTHER email address"

VM stopped issuing new email accounts more than 3 years ago, so you cannot sign up for a new VM email account. There is no longer any way to do that!

    2) "to access my account ...will need to use my virgin media mail - I don't have a virgin media mail"

VM use the phrase "virgin media mail" to refer to email accounts with any of their domains so: ntlworld.com, blueyonder.co.uk, virgin.net as well as virginmedia.com accounts.

So, when VM say "you’ll need use your Virgin Media Mail email address" that means you will need to sign in using the ntlworld.com email address as you did originally.

    3) "Today - I get an email to say I won't be able to use these to access my account and will need to use my virgin media mail "

VM send out a separate email notification for each email account affected by their latest change but they send the email to the non VM email address. So if you have only received one notification email then it relates to the VM (ntlworld?) email account that is linked to the non VM email address that received that notification email.

    4) Note that VM say "This will take effect automatically from 30/06/2025. You’ll still use your current password."

So don't do anything until 30th June (or 1st July) and then try signing into the affected ntlworld account using the ntlworld address (rather than the non VM address) as the username and the current password.  That's what I plan to do.

    5)  Does anyone know if there is an alternative?

Stop using VM email! New customers joining VM since May 2022 have not had the option to have VM email accounts and clearly VM do not see email as part of their offering going forward.

My email address was the main reason for staying VM - if I change everything (which I plan to do now) - I will be more inclined to shop around for my other services!

VM Mail (which includes the previous incarnations of ntlworld et al) is never going to improve. If anything it is only likely to deteriorate as numbers of users declines under VM's approach to reduce user numbers.

but without any explanation, the last time I read it, as to why this reverse change is required.

If you already have Gmail accounts working, your time would be best spent moving services under VM Mail over to Gmail.

This can be time consuming (I had to do it myself in the past) but the result of that effort is that you will end up with a reliable email service which does not require constant intervention to deal with problems every few months (or weeks/days/hours)
