Blocked email account

One of my secondary accounts has been blocked. I spent hours repeatedly following instructions to unblock it involving changing passwords etc. All to no avail. Today I spoke to Virgin for an hour and a half and he couldn't fix it. He said he would "write a ticket" and someone would contact me in 5 days. I asked why it was blocked. He said because I use the same password on other accounts which I've done for years. Any experience of this farce?

VM changed the security around email and addresses, in that all email addresses now need a 3rd party email to access, e.g. Gmail, Outlook etc.  I suspect this is now the situation you are in.  I'm guessing your primary account will now have a e.g. gmail account, so your secondary account will need the same.  These 3rd party accounts are only for logging in purposes, and do not remove your initial email addresses.

Thank you for your answer. One of the instructions I received was to change my login email for My Virgin Media to a Gmail address which I did but I’m still no nearer to unblocking the account in question. As I mentioned, the guy from customer service tried for 90 minutes and he couldn’t do it either. There’s valuable contact information in there I can’t afford to lose.

It's not clear from your post whether:

    • you cannot access this VM  email account when you sign in via the VM website
    • or whether you are using a third party email client /app such as Outlook or the Mail App to access you VM emails and the email app is not able to access (is being blocked from accessing) the VM email severs to pick up your VM emails
    • or perhaps it's  both?

If you could clarify that and post the error message or messages that suggest your email  account is blocked then a forum member should be able to offer some constructive advice.

"I asked why it was blocked. He said because I use the same password on other accounts which I've done for years"

It definitely is very unwise to do that.  It means that if a scammer gets hold of your email account credentials they can easily access any or all of your other online accounts and scam you for everything you've got. It is known as "credential stuffing" a favourite activity of scammers. If you are doing that then you are making it super easy for the scammers.

Having said all that I don't believe for one moment that is the reason VM have "blocked" your email account. For one thing VM should not even know what your VM email password is let alone the passwords for your other online accounts!!

I cannot access from VM website although I have tried other methods since.

The error message is very long and includes a list of things to do to unblock. It begins something along the lines of…”This email has been blocked” followed by a list of possible reasons, I.e. security etc. Regarding them not knowing my passwords, I firmly believe nothing is private anymore. I’m convinced they know everything about your activity including passwords. No, I’m not paranoid, just realistic.

Thanks for coming back with that.

I'm really intrigued because personally I have never seen an error message from VM like that.

It's strange that you cannot access your account yet the error message says  This email has been blocked” which suggests it's referring to a specific email that has been blocked. VM certainly do block emails for various reasons, we see that a lot.

I am not a VM employee just someone who enjoys coming on here to try and help people but I must admit I would really like to see the exact wording of that error message because:

        1. it would useful to be able to advise other people who get a similar message
        2. it would be especially useful to know what possible reasons VM have for blocking accounts.

Obviously if you do post any details make sure you don't include you email address.

        "nothing is private anymore"

Yes, what you spend your money on, what your interests are, where you go, plus a lot more are definitely all available. However, when it comes to passwords it is a bit different. But whatever you think, it really is a bad idea to use the same password across a number of accounts - you are just asking for trouble.
