Using FileZilla FTP with Hub 5x

We've just installed fibre broadband that comes with a broadband HUB 5x.

It works well for general web access but not with FileZILLA for FTP connections.  I just get FTP connection refused.

I've been trying for 2 days now to solve the problem with firewall settings and such, but no success.

Has anyone had a similar problem or can give advice.

Thanks

  • Solved! I solved the problem by using a different file transfer tool: WinSCP.    This uses a different protocol: SFTP (SSH File Share Protocol) instead of FTP and works fine with by 5x hub.  You just need to allow Port 22 on the firewalls.

There's a lot of feeling out there against FTP as being dated and insucure.  So I'm happy with this solution.  Thanks everyone for your comments.

  • Hi JohnSouth104 👋.

Thanks for reaching out to us and welcome to the Community Forums, sorry to hear of the issues that you are facing with FileZILLA. With Full Fibre and the Hub that we have that is associated for that service we do have restrictions in place where you are unable to change aspects the Hub settings and security protocols to cater for third party connections and equipment this does also include FTP sites.

Currently there is no plans to make this available for our Full Fibre customers, we do apologise.

Just a thought, have you tried disabling Parental Controls in your VM account?

Ohh no hub 5x having FTP problems they really need to add modem mode.

would this be you as the server or client?

Active mode? Try switching to passive mode. In this mode you are letting the server handle the extra complexity.

Really you think most people or even the FTP client would not try both in 2025?

The only person who uses  Active mode for FTP is just ME!

I havn't used ftp for the last two decades or so, so I'm not sure how various clients behave nowdays. :) but connection issues with ftp are usually realted to this. Maybe the server cannot deal with passive mode either :)

In any case VM just straight up wrong if they can't support FTP in 2025 what next HTTP, SSH telnet! ICMP! any UDP other then DNS!

I think the hub 5x without modem mode is to make spying on people easier

If hub5x is missing the ftp awareness, manually forwarding some ports for data connections could be an option, if one needs to connect to a server that has trouble with passive mode.

Does VM always provide a public ip?

I'm guessing more the fact the person has and is using passive mode and it don't work with the hub 5x. Its unlikely a person would setup FTP as active only. Given how bad VM do things to the hub 5x it likely blocks FTP or expects HTTPS like packets to happen by looking deep at the packet flow.

You can't just forward some ports for FTP in active
