Upload drops out every few minutes for 10-20 seconds at a time

Hi,

For the past year or so, our upload totally drops for around 10-20 seconds every few minutes, this makes video calls and gaming impossible.

I've tried:

  • restarting the hub
  • replacing the hub (free upgrade from virgin)
  • running the hub in modem only mode with a seperate wifi router
  • both wired and wifi

I've had BQM running for a while but I think it looks fine?

BQM

Please help!

Thanks

Btw, looking atthe the XML, it seems that the drop-outs occur exactly every hour.

Sorry, I didn't think the graph was going to be especially useful. I'm a bit new to the world of BQM.

Is this what you are after?

Thanks - and yes, there they are in red at the top of the graph.  Every hour, your session is destroyed by stuff VM shouldn't be doing.  Imo, it breaches their contract with you (and everyone else on XGS-PON.  They'' plead it's necessary to monitor this new network; no it's not unless they have a hard fault they're trying to trace which would not be done by this intrusive method.

Trouble is, the fibre network is provided by NEXFIBRE and there is an NNI (you can google that!) which then puts you onto VM's backbone and thus general service.

The Forum Team are not trained for this service so they'll offer you a telephone number to call.  Good luck with that.  Your mission, is to get those intrusive tests stopped.  Good luck with that too.

Do you think I'm likely to get them to stop?

They're sending out an engineer tomorrow. I don't know why as it's clearly something on their network side but on the support people on Level 1 chat/phone don't have a clue about what you're describing. They even use terms like wi-fi and broadband interchangeably which is a worry but no doubt more a symptom of common parlance rather than actual ignorance.

Not without some serious effort.  I suggest your first stop is ISP Review who are influential and might find this interesting enough to run an article.  VM are sensitive to bad publicity from them.

I'm sure ISP Review will carry this story for you - like they recently did with the misconfigured upstream story.

Right, I spoke to the VM team on Twitter who seem to have done something because they apparently contacted the XGS-PON team directly and since they said that, this has happened:

    Fingers crossed someone finally listened!

What is the "this"?  We don't see your image until someone has authorised it.

Then be patient 😛 . Because I can see the BQM graph.

Apologies - it was the BQM graph showing the tests no longer happening 😀

Sorry to hear this jim3108, I can see you've spoke to the team since this post.

        Did they help at all?

How has the connection been in the last few days?
