Search domain changed to cable.virginm.net

In the early hours of Apr 14 2025 the search domain of my Pi changed from raspberrypi to raspberrypi.cable.virginm.net

This seems a bit odd because I was asleep at this time and of course "cable.virginm.net" is an external host name, not like ".home"/".local"

Closest I can find via search is Local DNS suffix is now cable.virginm.net | Virgin Media Community - 5507800

I know this is a bit vague and there's not much I can find in logs for this, but why would the Virgin router be giving out this search domain? It is in router mode and always has been.

    One possibility is that the hub's DHCP server sent a new search domain in the DHCP lease for some networking or DNS reason. As a workaround, with the caveat that I'm no Pi user, set the Pi a static IP adress outside your hub’s DHCP range and define the DNS and search domain manually in your .conf file.

      It's causing no issue atm as I already have static for that. I'm just curious to why it suddenly did it. Seems like a bug or misconfiguration to me, DHCP shouldn't randomly change the search domain.

    In modem mode a VM Hub is transparent.

    Focus on your 3rd Party Router's behaviour.
