Ongoing issues with multi room v6 box

I had an additional V6 box fitted in the bedroom a few months ago, but I've been having intermittent issues where it says that my connection is too slow or that the  bedroom V6 box can't connect to the main V6 box down stairs.

After a lot of back and forth I was put through to someone in retentions said the if you could be because my kit was old.

Virgin sent out a new router (hub3) which is the same as the one I already have, the engineer said no point changing it as its exsatly the same.

An engineer came out who said that the signal was poor and kept dropping (i can't remember the actual words he used)

He fitted an signal amplifier and said it was miles better when he tested it.

That same night I had an issues with the Wi-Fi on my phone where page wouldn't load and then the v6 box in the bedroom had the 2 flashing arrows.

After a lot of messing about the V6 box in the bedroom was able to connect.

The same thing happened the next night and I was unable to watch anything from the downstairs V6 box on the V6 box upstairs. it was also playing up when trying to watch catch up.

Error codes:

V401, N17, V125, V210, C501

Could someone technical please help as whenever I ring Virgin they just try to flog me extra stuff.

If your Wifi is poor, you can either use the VM Pods, or get your own Wifi extender.  Depending on your contract, the Pods are either free, or £8pm to rent.  A powerline adapter (PLA) may be an easy solution to get a Wifi and/or a cable connection from the Hub downstairs to the V6 upstairs.  Something like this www.argos.co.uk/product/5585575

So each of your V6 requires an individual connection to the home-hub. Ethernet is always recommended, but reliable WiFi can work.

From the box that has wireless issues, follow Home > Help & Settings > Settings > Network. The wireless signal strength is shown in the top-right, what is yours?

Anything much below ~60% and you're increasing the scope for problems.

  • Tha ks for the replys

I was using an old Wi-Fi extender that I had but it never really worked properly because my house is so small it said i needed to move the extender further away, but it's hard to move it further away because I don't have endless amounts of sockets and the house is small.

The WiFi signal to the bedroom v6 box fluctuates from day to day between 40-47% (marginal).

I have a feeling I'm just going to have to put the hub into modem mode amd get my own router.

When I phone Virgin initially they said that the pods probably wouldn't help the issue as it was because I was only on 250 broadband.

I use a passthrough type powerline extender, so I do not lose the use of a socket. I had the same problems with flaky Wi-Fi, but the powerline has been rock solid since I installed it 5 years ago. You need one unit near the hub & one near the TV box (in ring main sockets, not power strips. Some provide Wi-Fi as well as Ethernet, some just extend Ethernet.

WiFi is not dependent on your Broadband speed by the way.  Anyway on the M250 the Pods would likely be £8pm to rent.  It may be better to pay £25 to get the Hub moved to a better location to distribute the WiFi better?

  • Thanks for the help

I have a really old PLA so i might set that up and just use a wired connection and see how it fairs and invest in a pair if it works ok.

Will also try moving the hub about see if it make a difference to the signal strength on the other V6 box (can't have it installed to a different location just because of the size of the house is tiny)

I will also look into the pods again.

    Thankyou for your help

  • Ok I'm probably going to get banned for being thick but... I moved the hub about meter and instantly got 70% as opposed to the 47% i was getting previously.

No, that's great.  Wifi is very pernickety about it's surroundings, so a slight move can improve things, or make them worse.  As VM state it's about finding your Hub's "happy place" .....  ;-)
