Can’t watch UHD recordings on 360 Mini box

We have a 360 installation with a main box downstairs and a mini box upstairs. The mini box is connected to a 4K TV and can watch things like Disney Plus, Prime Video etc. in 4K.

I notice there is a Virgin 4K channel. I can watch it live fine from the mini box, but if I record a show I’m unable to play it back on the mini box. It says something like “The channel only lets you watch it on the box it was recorded on”. Since the mini box can’t record itself, and the main box is only connected to a 1080p TV, I’m unable to watch recordings from the 4K channel.

I would move the main box to the room with the 4K TV, but it’s a bedroom and I find the noise of the hard drive disturbing. Is there a way to watch these recordings in 4K from the Mini box?

  • I haven't been able to watch 4K recordings on my mini box either haven't checked all of them because I will probably watch on my main box and then delete them. You sort of make the assumption that the box isn't capable of sending that amount of data, I am very possibly wrong and maybe it's a copyright thing.

Going to your other problem how much noise does your hard drive make, I don't think my box makes enough noise to stop me from sleeping. Is it the hard drive or the fan, some older V6 boxes had problems with the fan running fast after updating to 360.

Edited to add; It would be interesting to know if someone like newapollo can watch 4K recordings from one updated V6 box to another updated V6 box.

  • Hi Tom41

Thanks for posting and welcome back to the community. This issue occurs because Virgin Media's 360 mini boxes cannot play back 4K content that was recorded on the main 360 box. The 4K content is licensed only for playback on the box it was recorded on, and Mini Boxes are designed to stream live TV and on-demand content, not to play recorded 4K shows.

Content owners permit UHD playback only on the devices which do the recordings, so the disk-less 360 mini and Stream boxes cannot do playbacks. There is an exception in that Sky minis do UHD streaming but only for Sky's own content.
