Ongoing Issues with 1Gbps Connection – Seeking Resolution

Since the beginning of 2025, I’ve noticed that my broadband speeds have consistently fallen below the minimum recommended threshold for a 1Gbps connection.

The first occurrence was on January 10th, 2025, but after a reboot, the issue resolved itself. However, the same problem resurfaced on January 16th and 17th, 2025, where speeds were limited to 100Mbps. I reached out to Virgin Media, and they promptly sent an engineer on January 18th, 2025. The engineer replaced my Super Hub 5, and everything seemed to be working fine—until now.

Today, January 31st, 2025, while working from home, I noticed sluggish connectivity. A speed test confirmed that the issue had returned. I reviewed my Broadband Quality Monitor to check for any patterns or spikes in average latency, as seen in previous instances, but nothing stands out as an obvious root cause.

Has anyone else experienced similar recurring speed drops? Any insights or potential fixes would be greatly appreciated.

My Super Hub 5 is in Modem Mode, so RealSpeed isn’t available to me unless I switch back to Router Mode.

Recurrent speed drops to below 100 Mb/s on an Ethernet connection are often a sign of a failing network cable.   A Cat5e cable is all that is needed for 1 Gb/s connection but if any of the fine cores breaks it may de-rate to 100Mb/s, it is almost better for a cable to fail totally so we know a replacement is needed.

  • I have performed a 5-minute power cycle, which has resolved the issue "For Now". However, I find this unusual, as I’ve never needed to do this so frequently in the past. Previously, my connection remained stable throughout the entire year, with no changes to my infrastructure, new devices, or software updates—aside from routine security patches.
