How to change from DOCSIS to XGS PON

Hi

i was wondering if anyone can help me. I recently upgraded to 1gig broadband and the connection has since become extremely unreliable, in addition to poor speeds.

On my street xgs pon is now available with a new cab installed, and my neighbour has just had it installed.

my question is, how can I get my connection upgraded from docsis to xgs pon. Any advice or help would be amazing.

  • I'm not aware that you can yet. Did your neighbour have a legacy Docsis connection before getting Xgs-pon? Who is their new Xgs-pon provider? Are you able to post a picture of their current external installation?

No, my neighbour is a brand new customer with a brand new install.

he has taken service with virgin. A 3rd party has run the cable via ducting from the catv pit to the cab.

im guessing virgin will do the final part of the connection to his house.

its annoying that if you have docsis you can’t be migrated. You end up paying a similar amount for a worst service

I believe new customers are connected to XGS-PON if the facility is live at that address.  However I also believe there is no current plan to swap old DOCIS connections over to XGS-PON.

The Fibre cabinets have been installed in our area for a few years now, but none of the existing DOCIS users that I know have been migrated as yet.

The Project Mustang areas are likely to offer 2Gig Symmetrical first, as this will not be available on the DOCSIS network. Then there will be a staged migration to ensure there are not capacity problems on the new network.

It will be interesting to see how they manage to migrate my connection from co-ax to fibre, when there are no poles and the existing cable is just buried under the grass with no conduit ...  I suspect there will be quite a few with the same issues.

By comparison our RFoG connection looks like an easier migration.

In the back of the OMNI box is quite a spool of spare fibre that could be used in place of the < 10 metres of coax & the external ONT would be retired.

VM has not, AFAIK, migrated anyone from DOCSIS to XGS-PON. All XGS-PON users are new customers on nexfibre's network although some might now be on VM's XGS-PON.

  • My street has been upgraded too and I've been speaking to retentions about this my contract ends soon if I go to a camparison website new customer it's available at my address so am thinking of leaving and coming back as its now £74 for 1gb I don't want tv or phone just want faster upload tbh vm should offer a upgrade add on for the 1gb which would be good only do fast you can download from the source
