Street Cabled Years Ago, Still Not Connected

Our street was cabled in roughly 2017, but the postcode checker still lists no availability at all. I've checked the little cover in the street outside my property and there's cable running through them.

Previous attempts to get this checked have failed. It was a real big undertaking when they dug up the streets as they did the whole area - seems strange that all that effort is wasted, you'd hoover up customers along here as there's seemingly no other Gigabit offering in the pipeline.

  • Hello kirbs74,

Welcome back to the Community and thanks for taking the time to post here on the forums. We're sorry to hear that you've not been able to get a correct answer or any progress from the previous attempts to do this. Who have you been in touch with to have this checked into previously?

    Kind Regards,

    Steven_L

  • Hi Steven,

I spoke to Sales a few years back and they were going to get a local engineer ("spotter"?) to check and come back to me, but I never heard back. Likewise a team member on here was going to check with a "Local Manager", but again I didn't get a response back. In fairness, I think the last time I chased was around COVID time, so "spotter" activity could have been restricted.

I periodically check back each time my ADSL contract is coming to an end in the hope that the connectivity would now be there, but the whole street of ~100 properties is still absent from your list, despite everyone seemingly having a cable point (with cable in) at the end of their drives.

    Thanks,

    Neil

Have you completed the form here to be kept up to date with serviceability in your area?

Filled in numerous "keep me updated about rollout plans" forms in the past. But I've filled that one in too just now.

My guess is that if it hasn't happened in the 8 years since you dug up the road and laid the cable, it's not going to. But all very strange as to why the cabling was done in the first place.

    Very Insightful Person

I have got to say as far as cable services in the UK are concerned, it is not unusual to have cable builds abandoned. Several of the original franchise holders went bust in the early 1990s. Some were taken over by another operator, some were not. VM have also abandoned a few builds due to unforeseen costs taking them over budget. Fortunately, with the move to cheaper full fibre networks in the future there may be hope for some of these areas being modified to the new technology VM is now retrofitting.
