Is Gig2 full fibre really a 30 day contract?

On the VM website if I put the post code I am interested in there, most of the broadband options are an 18 month contract.

However if I select the most expensive option Gig2 broadband, it says "30 day rolling contract".

Is that really correct that I can get 2 Gig broadband fitted without any tie in or is the website reporting incorrect information?

  • You are right....

This is the screenshot from the details of the Gig 2 option....

At the same screen on all the other options it says "18 month contract" in the same popup box.

However - if you then place a basket order and go through the next screens, it does say "Main services 18 month contract".  So it's just the shopping screen that is misleading.

Question is though - if I sign up for a lower speed like 350 or suchlike, can I upgrade to the higher speed during the 18 month period and pay the difference but still keeping the same 18 month discount rate?

Do you have the equipment, e.g. PC, switch, NAS, to handle Gig2? Very few people do.

Possibly not - I would have to look into it a bit.

You could sign up at say 350 then upgrade to 2000, but we can not predict at what price will that happen and it may restart another 18 month contract.

VM will not upgrade you at the price 2000 being offered today to a new joiner.

It may be better to order 2000/2000 from the start if that is what you really desire.

2000/2000 would enable Download or Upload of 21600 Gigabytes per day.

    Hi @Javert

The VM website only indicates 4 speeds available on a rolling 30 day contract.

    https://www.virginmedia.com/broadband/rolling-contract

    M50, M125, M250 and M350 - screenshot below

And from the FAQ's on the same page :-

What is the difference between a fixed monthly contract and a rolling monthly contract?
There are a few differences in the cost and flexibility of these deals, which you’ll want to consider.
    Fixed term contracts:
Long term commitment, usually for 18 or 24 months.
You can leave early but for a fee.
Wider choice of speeds and services.
    Lower monthly prices.
    Rolling monthly contracts:
No commitment, broadband lasts 30 days at a time.
No early termination fee, cancel at any time.
TV bundles, and M500 and Gig1 speeds aren’t available.
Higher upfront costs, there’s a £45 rolling contract fee.

That page doesn't specifically state that Gig2 isn't available (it looks like it needs updating) however it's indicating that speeds above M350 are not available on a rolling contract.

      Hi again Javert

If you sign up to a lower speed and then upgrade to a higher speed then you would lose any current discounts as you would be starting a new contract. ou would therefore have to try and negotiate a new price that's suitable to both yourself and VM.

You could however take advantage of the VMO2 Volt benefits and increase your speed to the next available tier (up to Gig1) if you or anybody else living in the same property as yourself have an O2 sim.

Volt benefits available if you have or sign up to both an eligible Virgin Media broadband service and an eligible O2 Pay Monthly tariff. Excludes Essential broadband customers. Volt benefits include (1) Virgin Media broadband speed boost to the next available level (up to a max of 1Gbps download speed) available to you in at the point you place your order.

Volt speed boosts are only applied once. If you've had a boost previously and are already on a Volt speed before upgrading, then you would not be boosted any further.

  • If anything VM is moving towards longer 24 month contracts. Do you have a screenshot?
