I need to change my VM landline number

I've had my landline since around 2000 but need to change it as I've been getting quite a few calls over the past year or more from members of the public asking for an institute handling mental health!

I don't know if there's a fault in the line but when I called the institute in question, they suggest I contact VM and ask to get my number changed.

If someone could help me that would be great.  I tried calling the 150 from my landline but the options aren't very helpful or relevant.

Thank you.

  • Hi khls15995,

Thank you for your post. We're sorry to hear about the calls you have been getting.

We can certainly look into getting the landline number changed for you.

To confirm, there is a £25 cost for this that would be applied to your next bill.

And once we have submitted the order we cannot reverse this and your intial number would be lost.

With that information, would you like to proceed?

Possibly a fault of some kind (which VM should investigate for you). Possibly the number for the mental health service has been misprinted somewhere and replaced with your number. Are the two similar in any way?

Worth keeping in mind that a 'new' VM number is not actually new at all but comes from a pool of previously-used VM numbers. Some of these numbers can bring with them their own set of problems from past users. That may be a factor in your decision to change number depending on how many unwanted calls you are receiving.

I don't have a landline any more but my last VM landline has this device on it

    https://www.truecall.co.uk/category-s/116.htm

which screens the calls as they come in and only rings your phone when the caller announces themselves and presses a button on the handset. You can also leave an announcement stating they are dialling a private residential number.

Thank you so much for your response Alessandro.  I asked one or two callers and they said that they were given my number which is weird.

I think what I'm going to have to do is to get the number of the people whom they've been in contact with and call them instead, i.e. the doctor or who ever it was.

Thank you also for your suggestion re: truecall.
