Upgrading (paying them more) is easily done online.
Downgrading (paying them less) can't be done online and is made as difficult as possible.
Its a profitable business model.

Welcome to the Community Forums.Sorry to hear of your concerns about how you can remove services/channels from your package.
It is a little trickier with cancelling/removing channels or services depending on how the package is built and bundled together. Making these changes may affect the package as a whole, with things like eligible discounts and if the channels/services are inclusive within the bundle's price or add-ons. This is why further support is needed for these types of requests.
If you've a stream box, you can manage your subscriptions online, through the set-top box and online account. This is because the discount is per subscription ( so at present 10% off), and so is easier to amend without affecting any other services/channels. You can find more about this here should you need.

Agree it is a total pain. I was on chat for OVER 2 hours yesterday trying to remove Sky Sports. And ultimately told it would cost me £21.25 EXTRA a month to do so!! It is utterly ridiculous because I got Sky Sports via an email offer and it is NOT part of my package. I cannot believe M125 broadband and basic TV should cost £81/month.
I have copied the T&Cs from the original email. Surely my payment should go DOWN £22.25.Sky Sports SD Offer: Only available in the UK to selected Virgin Media TV customers (excluding existing Sky Sports and Sky Cinema customers). Sky Sports SD package £18.75 a month for 18 months. Saving of over 40% is based on £18.75 a month spread over 18 months versus the standard price of £31.75. From month 19, you will automatically be charged the full standard monthly price currently £31.75 a month for SkySports SD package, unless you choose to cancel by providing Virgin Media with at least 30 days’ notice. This offer must be kept for at least 30 days but can then be cancelled on 30 days' notice at any time. Offer redeemable by main Virgin Media account holder only. Channel line-ups are subject to change. This offer may not be used in conjunction with any other offer unless stated by Virgin Media. Virgin Media reserves the right to withdraw or amend the discount if you change any part of your offer package. Service usually upgraded within 48 hours, but in case of exceptional demand may take up to 5 working days.
The £1.46 cost per Premier League game is calculated by multiplying £18.75 a month by 10 (Premier League season is 10 months long) = £187.50. Divide by 128 Premier League games being broadcast live on Sky Sports = £1.46 cost per Premier League game.
Sky Sports HD ’ Half Price HD (£3.50) for 12 months: Sky Sports SD subscription required to take Sky Sports channels in HD. Sky Sports HD channels £3.50 a month for 12 months when already subscribing to Sky Sports SD channels. Saving of 50% is based on £3.50 a month spread over 12 months versus the standard price of £7 (total saving of £42 over the 12 months). From month 13, you will automatically be charged the full standard monthly price for Sky Sports HD package, currently £7 per month, unless you choose to cancel by providing Virgin Media with at least 30 days’ notice. Sky Sports must be kept for at least 30 days but can then be cancelled on 30 days' notice at any time. This price is on top of your existing Virgin Media cable services monthly subscription cost. Sky Sportswebsite and apps: Only available via the Sky Sports website or apps (for selected iOS and Android mobiles and tablets) to customers who subscribe to these channels. Live streaming and On Demand requires broadband/WiFi or 3G/4G/5G Internet access. Subject to mobile providers terms and conditions, as well as your personal data allowance. Additional charges may apply, please check with your provider to confirm. Maximum of 6 devices can be registered but content can only be viewed on one device at any given time. Sorry to hear of your concerns with removing a channel.
Removing a service/channel may affect discounts also applied. By making these changes it would sometimes mean that certain discounts are no longer eligible to be applied and so can cause the price to increase.

@Carley_S I don’t understand why taking Sky Sports (& HD) as a email offer would affect any discounts that were already on my account. I feel as if I have been forced to keep Sky Sports. I really do not want to spend another couple of hours on chat to resolve this. Life is too short. As the OP stated it should be available via My Virgin Media. I can cancel Sports on NOW TV in seconds with no interaction with chat nor phone. Contract ends early May, so I will suck it up until then.
