IPv4 vs IPv6

Is the widespread problem with VM Broadand because it alone if major UK broadband providers is still stuck on IPv4. Most others are on IPv6?

I found this website provides the background to the underinvestment issue that may be going to break VM in the UK.

  • It’s true that many UK broadband providers have moved to IPv6, but Virgin Media's delay could be contributing to performance issues. IPv6 adoption is crucial for scaling networks and improving reliability, so this underinvestment might hurt VM in the long run.

Err, well, no it isn’t, and I’m more than happy to be corrected, if you can provide evidence for this. that would be good.

Just go to downdetector and compare underlying level of complaints VM Vs anyone else.

There is (was?) a long running thread here that was over 10 years old asking when IPv6 would be available.  It is available in VM ROI albeit they have to have CGNAT for IPv4.

    the widespread problem

IPv6 at home is required for what types of domestic equipment ?

Don't order VM broadband if it is not suited to your special needs.

virgin media will be the last ISP in the world to add IPv6 and I'm happy with that.

I think the real answer is that IP v6 is little used in the US and until that changes I see VM not introducing it. Another point is with VM eventually replacing their coax DOCSIS with full fibre I would not expect IP v6 until this is completed.

    Short answer.

Prospect of IPv6 over DOCSIS: 0%.

    Prospect of IPv6 over XGS-PON: 100%.

If I were a betting man I'd wager a trial on nexfibre's network.

You need to say what you think the widespread problem caused by using IPv4 is. Many of us use the network today without obvious problems.

I suspect VM's problems are not caused by using IPv4, that is the least of their worries ...

The subscriber end of VM's network is such a patchwork of old and new technologies that I can't imagine them converting to v6 until it's FTTP throughout. And that's going to cost billions. But of course they will need to have trials on unsuspecting customers.
