IP Changed

Hello,

With no intervention from my side, My IP just randomly changed from 82.x.x.x to 97.x.x.x, What's that all about? My Geo location has me down as in Edinburgh now, but I'm located in Manchester.

Any input would be great.

Your IP address is generated by a DHCP server and the "D" means dynamic. So it can change and it's completely normal.

Hi, thanks for the reply, it is a pretty dramatic change though? 82 to 97? I was thinking something was wrong.

It's normal for the IP to change, it just doesn't happen very often on VM compared to other ISPs. The location will update within a few weeks and the 82 to 97 is nothing to worry about.

Sorry for the double post in another section, I've not been on this forum (if that what it still is) for a very long time.

VM don't do a sub set IP range in the same range per given location they have IP addresses that range very different for one another. Not sure of VM reason for this maybe if some people are having a problem  in a given area not all will be affected? then you can use modem mode to get a new IP that may be away from the affected one or subnet.

  • Thanks all for the replies and the merge of my double post, sorry for that.

I understand it's a dynamic IP, I guess having the 82 IP address for well over a year alarmed me when it changed to something totally different, I've only ever seen that happen when changing the MAC of my router, having read a bit more on sub sets etc and the input from you guys I'm feeling a little better.

I run a few services from my home, so I've had to update everything, I've also just figured out the bagu-xx-xx-v4wan-xxxxxx-custxxxx.vm21.cable.virginm.net can be used instead of the IP address, my question is now does this also change or is this a permanent link to each customer?

Thanks again all, you've been great as per

The bagu-xx-xx-v4wan-xxxxxx-custxxxx.vm21.cable.virginm.net is given to that IP another IP will be different.
